Dear Parents, Guardians, and Members of our School Community,
We understand that the safety and wellbeing of our students are of utmost importance to us. Increasingly, schools in Australia are responding to complex risk of harm matters to ensure duty of care obligations are met in their school community.
Therefore, our management team as primary and secondary school coordinator and I attended Risk Assessment and Management in Schools: Child Protection and Mental Health by AISNSW last week.
This professional learning, Risk Assessment and Management in Schools equips us with the necessary skills to respond to student self-harm, suicide ideation/behaviour, aggression or problematic sexualised behaviour.
Across the day we were guided through:
- Identifying risk of harm and providing supports.
- Involving specialist staff (internal or external).
- Collaborating and ongoing planning to mitigate risk.
By the end of this professional learning, we were equipped with the confidence and knowledge to take proactive steps in creating a safer environment for our students, upholding our duty of care responsibilities.
I would like to take this moment to express my gratitude to all parents for your unwavering support. I invite you to join us for our end of year musical on Thursday, October 26th. Since seating is limited, I encourage you to reserve your spots via https://www.trybooking.com/CKLFA before they are all taken. This performance is especially noteworthy as it is the first student-led Turkish musical in Australia. While the musical is in Turkish, remember that music is a universal language capable of touching hearts and souls. I highly recommend that all parents come experience this extraordinary performance.
Wishing you all a wonderful holiday, and looking forward to reconnecting in Term 4.
Kind regards,
Primary School Coordinator's Message
Dear Maarif Families,
We leave behind another exciting and eventful term. In particular, we have had a strong focus on student wellbeing. At Maarif, we foster a positive and inclusive school culture that promotes respect, kindness and empathy. We believe in taking a proactive approach and educating our students, empowering them to take action against any type of bullying and be champions of kindness and respect.
Bullying is a repeated, intentional and aggressive pattern of behaviour, where an individual or group of individuals use their power, physical, verbal or psychological, to harm, intimidate or control another person who is perceived as being less powerful or vulnerable. It can happen face-to-face or online.
We acknowledged R U OK? Day last week where students came to school dressed in yellow as a reminder of the importance of checking in and asking, “R U OK?” This is an important initiative aimed at promoting mental health awareness and encouraging open conversations about mental wellbeing.
We have collaborated with our local Youth Liaison Officers and NSW Martial Arts team to conduct anti-bullying workshops to address bullying comprehensively. Students were given information on bullying, the different types of bullying and its impact on young people. Students were taught a variety of strategies to help assess and respond to bullying situations and identify and understand the role of bystanders. Cyber bullying as well as social media safety strategies were also explored. Students have become more aware about the dangers of cyberbullying and the responsible use of technology. I encourage all parents to be vigilant about their child’s online activities and to report any incidents promptly.
By fostering a holistic approach to primary student wellbeing, we can help our students develop the necessary skills and attitudes for success academically and emotionally.
I wish everyone a restful and rejuvenating break and look forward to Term 4.
With warm regards,
Mrs Reyhan Er
Primary School Coordinator

We Enjoyed The Outdoors!
KA students went on an excursion to the Bungarribee Park at Western Sydney Parklands where they spent a day with rangers to help them understand moving objects. They watched a live show of how things move and then had a turn at making paper rockets and the students shot them up to the sky using a pipe system. They also had the opportunity to look for bugs! Ada found a bee and we released it back to nature. To make the environment more stimulating, we asked them to find other types of moving creatures such as a snake which was plastic and lizards. To wrap up the day, we made slime using water and flour, the students really enjoyed this experience. What a great adventure KA!

Bungarribee Park
The students in KC took a bumpy bus ride to Bungarribee Park at Western Sydney Parklands. The students interacted with many different activities and learned more about moving objects. Students had the chance to make paper rockets and fly them, made slime in groups, caught bugs, and then released them, and took turns on wheelie carts where they pulled each other and had turns riding them. Despite the high temperature, students had an enriching day with their classmates, teachers, and the park rangers.

Centennial Parklands
Year 1 students recently embarked on a thrilling excursion to Centennial Parklands, immersing themselves in the natural wonders of the park through activities like pond netting, mud-mapping at Lachlan Swamp, and weather surveys. In the same week, we also had the opportunity to enjoy a delightful visit to Riverside Theatre to watch "Winnie the Pooh Musical," which the students found incredibly enjoyable. This education also introduced them to the world of theatre, leaving them with cherished memories of a week filled with adventure and cultural enrichment.

EXCURSION
Last week we went on our excursion to Centennial Park. It was a nice day and we enjoyed being out on such a nice weather. First, we were taken to the ‘flying foxes’ by our host and observed them in their own nature. Then we visited ‘Percy the Possum’ and his house. Afterwards, we watched the geese waddle past and our host let us catch some ‘bugs’ from the ‘Lachlan swamp’ using a net. We observed these bugs and tried to find them on the chart. Then we made our way to our lunch area and enjoyed having our lunch and played a little in the play area.

Stage 1’s Day Out at Centennial Park
Year 2A had a fun day out at Centennial Park!
This excursion was an immersive learning experience that deepened Year 2’s appreciation for nature and the world around them. During their guided walks, the children discovered the park's rich variety of life, from tiny bugs to tall trees, each with its own unique tale to tell. They engaged in activities like mud-mapping and other various hands-on experiences which allowed them to delve deeper into the park’s ecosystem.

Let’s Explore!
The Year 3 students had an amazing time on their recent excursion to the Carrs Park Bush Park! They were so excited to dive into the day's activities, which included bug catching – you should have seen their faces light up when they found those little critters. They also got to unleash their creativity by making habitats for beach animals, and it was heartwarming to see how much they cared about providing a safe space for those creatures. Let's not forget the bushwalking adventure, where they learned firsthand how important it is to take care of our environment. It was a day of discovery, fun, and some important life lessons about the world around us.

The students of Year 3A were totally engrossed in a game that delved into the fascinating world of light rays and how they bounce off surfaces. What made it even more exciting was that the game had different levels, which really tested their understanding of this concept. As they progressed through the levels, you could see the wheels turning in their heads as they figured out the complicated patterns of light reflection. It was both a fun and educational experience that pushed them to think critically and develop a deeper grasp of how light behaves.

3D Shapes
The last week of the term has arrived, and we're absolutely thrilled about the upcoming break! This week 3B students explored 3D shapes. We got creative with popsicle sticks to construct unique designs. Each group enthusiastically crafted their very own 3D shape, fostering hands-on learning and teamwork.
In this English task for 3B, students learned how descriptive and comparative language is used in informative texts. They listened to descriptions of an animal and created drawings based on those descriptions, highlighting the variations in their interpretations. Through discussions and additional descriptive language, they refined their drawings to make them more similar. This activity aimed to enhance their understanding of descriptive language in informative texts.
Students in 3B really got into the spirit of ‘R U OK’ Day by wearing bright yellow to school and diving into a bunch of classroom activities. We worked on a cool acoustic poem, whipped up some awesome in-class posters, and had a blast with various activities. It was a fun and thought-provoking lesson that we all enjoyed.

To wrap up the final week, we had special visitors from our local NSW police who conducted an anti-bullying workshop for students in grades 3-6, covering various areas, including cyberbullying. We hope you had an enjoyable and enriching Term 3.
Have a safe and joyful holiday, see you all in Term 4!

Cricket Game!
To end the term students utilised their skills learnt to play a game of cricket. Students have been thoroughly enjoying the sport of cricket. They have been showcasing their skills in batting, bowling, catching and fielding. Cricket not only keeps them physically active but also instils important values of teamwork and sportsmanship. We're delighted to see our students embracing this exciting game!

Anti-Bullying Workshops
This week, Year 4B students actively engaged in anti-bullying workshops that blended martial arts principles with empathy, self-empowerment and social-emotional skills. Under the guidance of committed and expert instructors, our students honed their abilities to identify, prevent, and address bullying scenarios through a dynamic mix of role-play, engaging discussions, and even the application of martial arts techniques - emerging as allies for one another.
To further build on their acquired knowledge, students enriched their understanding by completing visible thinking routine activities. Their takeaways, as they thoughtfully reflected, included the understanding that standing up to bullies doesn't always require confrontation, that kindness and empathy are powerful tools, and the importance of mindfulness in creating a safe and valued school community. Year 4B will continue to work together in fostering a safe, nurturing, and inclusive environment for all students.

Term 3 - A Great Journey
Welcome to our final week! Term 3 has been a great journey the students and I have embarked on together. 5A has experienced a term filled with growth, learning and memorable experiences to conclude Term 3.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for supporting your child’s learning experience. For the upcoming term, I have more exciting and engaging learning experiences for 5A in store, including more opportunities for personal and academic growth. I am excited to welcome everyone back for Term 4 and continue the journey to conclude the student's Year 5 academic year.
This week, students showed their support for R U OK? Day, which is an Australian initiative, aimed at promoting mental health awareness and encouraging people to check in with one another and ask if they’re okay. This day was filled with activities related to the importance of checking in on one another and their well-being.
Additionally, in reconciliation of Hiroshima Peace Day and upon completion of our novel – Sadako and a thousand paper cranes, students created paper lanterns, to memorialise those who lost their lives due to the tragic event that unfolded in Hiroshima during World War II.
Thank you for your ongoing support, and we wish you a safe and enjoyable break.

Welcome to Week 10 of Term 3!
I hope that all students have been having an amazing term and are excited for the school holidays which are approaching. Students throughout the term in science were learning about energy systems and the different types of energy systems. Students actively engaged by working as a team to build a small windmill and create a solar oven using recycled material through the Ranger Jamie workshop they attended. Students deepened their knowledge in class in the last three weeks by learning about the different circuit systems. Students in the class created different series and parallel circuits, which was also part of their assessment. Students enjoy hands-on activities in class which increases their creative thinking and allows them to use different mental and physical strategies to build a circuit that is successfully working.
Here are some photos of students participating in the circuit-making.

Learning to count is not just about numbers; it is an adventure filled with songs, laughter, and exciting discoveries. Our kindergarteners have been singing counting songs, counting aloud with enthusiasm, and practising writing these numbers. It is a holistic approach that makes learning not only practical but also fun and engaging. They have also taken on the challenge of counting backward, a bit like solving a puzzle in reverse, which adds an extra layer of excitement to their numerical adventure.

Assalamu Alaikum wa rahmetullahi wa barakatuh,
All praise be to Allah (SWT) and may peace and blessings be upon His beloved Prophet Muhammad (SAW), his family, companions and to all those who follow him.
Alhamdulillah, we have come to the end of another school term and which I would like to thank all parents and guardians for all their help and supporting our students throughout the term.
Our students in Primary had in class project tasks for Islamic Studies. This was to show their understanding of some topics covered throughout the term.
The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said, "The best of you in Islam are those with the best character, if they have religious understanding.”
We pray that Allah (SWT) allows our students to understand and act upon what they understand and to have the best of character.

Reading & Writing
Our focus has been on reading and writing sentences. Even though our spelling words are a big part of our lessons, we have left it for students to learn and do their Look, Cover, Write, and Check at home.
It shows within the class that certain students have been reading books and practising their words at home. It is always encouraged for parents to please sit with their child for even 5 minutes a day and listen to them read. It builds their fluency in sentence reading not to mention confidence.
Overall, our students have shown immense improvement in literacy. Something they can be proud of.
We hope to only improve in the coming term.
Please continue reading and writing with your child throughout the holidays. It will be a huge help when we start Term 4.

To foster a culture of wellness and smart choices, one must be cautious of the food they consume. We encourage our parents to promote healthy eating habits and reduce sugar intake in student lunchboxes. A well-balanced diet lays the foundation for optimal physical and mental development. By incorporating a variety of nutrient-rich foods, we provide our students with the essential vitamins, minerals, and energy they need to excel in their studies and activities.
We understand the convenience of pre-packaged snacks, but we encourage you to explore alternatives that prioritise nutrition without compromising taste. Fresh fruits, crunchy vegetables, whole-grain sandwiches, and lean protein sources offer a delightful array of options. By reducing sugar-laden foods, we can help prevent energy crashes and maintain a steady focus throughout the day. Opt for fresh fruits, yogurt with no added sugars, and homemade treats made with natural sweeteners like honey or fruit puree.

According to ACARA National Standards for student attendance, parents are required to complete an Application for Leave Form for holidays within the school term or other leave. Applications should be submitted 14 days prior to the leave. The Principal approves this leave as appropriate.
For all student leave requests (1-50 days) an application form should be submitted to the school at least 14 days prior to the requested leave date. Supporting documentation, such as travel ticket or itinerary, should be included with student holiday leave applications.
Holidays taken by students outside of School vacation periods are included as absences.
Families are encouraged to holiday or travel during school vacations rather than in term time. If travel during the school term is necessary, the following considerations apply:
- If the Principal accepts the reason for the absence, the absence will be marked as justified leave.
- If the Principal does not believe the absence is in the student’s best interests and does not accept the reason, the absence will be recorded as unjustified leave.
The Leave form can be accessed below:
We request that our parents and/or carers are extra cautious during school drop off and pick up times.
Please ensure NSW Government rules regarding road safety are being followed and adhered to at all times.
This means:
- Respecting the road rules and signs, and driving within the speed limit of 40km/h in a school zone.
- Parking safely in designated parking areas or in drop off/pick up zones.

Maarif students are expected to wear their Summer school uniform during Term 1. Please be reminded of the importance of naming all items of school uniform with your child’s name and class. This means that lost items found around school can easily be returned.
We consider that uniform is important for several reasons.
- It provides pupils with a sense of identity and pride in their school.
- It enhances the appearance of pupils and therefore the reputation of the school.
- It helps to instil a sense of purpose in pupils when they put on their uniform in the mornings.
- It helps overcome the worry about “fitting in” with fashions and keeping up with other children. All children feel equal and there is no stress, competition or worry for families about expensive brands/labels.
- It overcomes the problem for both parents and teachers about what is suitable attire for school.
