Implementing Tier 2 PBIS Interventions for Enhanced Student Support
Dear Parents, Guardians, and Members of our School Community,
I am thrilled to announce that our PBIS (Positive Behavioural Interventions and Supports) School team and Management Team have recently attended a specialized Tier 2 Workshop conducted by AISNSW. This training comes as part of our continuous efforts to provide an enriching and supportive environment for all our students.
Purpose of Tier 2 Interventions. The essence of Tier 2 is to:
- Provide additional support to students who are at-risk
- Teach appropriate behaviours explicitly
- Examine the function of a student’s behaviour
- Offer extra instruction, feedback, and acknowledgment
- Deliver standardized interventions to our students
Essential Elements of Tier 2. These interventions are designed to be:
- Quickly Accessible: Immediate support to meet students' needs.
- Minimally Disruptive: To be seamlessly integrated into existing classroom routines.
- Easily Learned: Consistent with quality educational practices.
- Aligned with Tier 1: To maintain consistency across the school.
- Staff Awareness: Ensuring all staff members understand their roles.
- Flexibility: Adapted to fit most students with some room for customization.
- Behavioural Alignment: Directly addresses the function of the student’s problem behaviour.
Additional Features of Tier 2:
These features enhance the structure and predictability of the interventions. They also facilitate communication between school and home and include orientations for staff and students alike.
Who Qualifies for Tier 2?
Students who show frequent but minor problem behaviours across multiple locations, need enhanced Tier 1 supports to prevent escalating behaviour or display internalizing or externalizing behaviours.
Data Collection: The Big 5. This involves tracking:
- Most frequently reported behaviours
- Locations of these behaviours
- Timing of these behaviour referrals
- Identification of students demonstrating these behaviours
- The frequency of these behaviour referrals
Preparing for Tier 2. Our preparations involve:
- Establishing a dedicated Tier 2 team.
- Assessing the level of commitment within our school.
- Developing a Tier 2 readiness action plan.
What Does the Tier 2 Team Do? The team will:
- Identify qualifying students
- Select appropriate interventions
- Determine entry and exit criteria
- Monitor progress
- Provide essential data to the Tier 1 team
Check-in, Check-Out (CICO) Strategy:
This strategy is particularly beneficial for students who struggle despite our proactive prevention measures. Those who will benefit the most typically have both academic and behavioural difficulties and have received multiple minor or major referrals.
- Critical Features of CICO
- Increased positive adult contact and attention
- Embedded social skills training
- Focus on teaching and reinforcing positive behaviours
- Home-school communication
- Contingent positive reinforcement
We believe that this enhanced focus on Tier 2 interventions will bring us one step closer to achieving our vision: to be a pioneering school, nurturing pure-minded people who use their knowledge for peace and the welfare of humanity, from a community level to the global stage. Your support and understanding are essential for the success of this initiative, and as always, we welcome any feedback or queries you may have.
Kind regards,
Primary School Coordinator's Message
Dear Parents/Carers,
As we come to the end of Term 3, I would like to congratulate our School Leadership Team for taking on a leadership role to represent the interests, concerns, and ideas of their classmates and setting a positive example for their peers by demonstrating our school values, good behaviour and taking on responsibility. Our leaders support the development of responsible behaviours, and a positive school tone and encourage students to model the school values. Our school allows for shared leadership responsibilities, ensuring that decision-making is not solely dependent on one person.

The end of the year is fast approaching, and we will be celebrating the achievements and milestones of our wonderful Year 6 students. We had Pyjama Day where students came to school dressed in their pyjamas and made a donation. Pyjama Day is not only about wearing favourite comfortable clothes; it is about creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere that promotes a love for reading, learning and a strong sense of community. The funds raised will go towards creating a memorable Year 6 graduation experience. Our aim is to make the transition to secondary school as memorable and inspiring as possible for our students. There will be another fundraising event coming up in Term 4 and we sincerely thank you for your support.
Parent-Teacher-Student interviews will be held in Week 10 and are a valuable opportunity to strengthen the home-school connection and promote collaborative efforts to support students’ education. During the interviews in Term 1, students had set goals in collaboration with their teachers and parents. Students have been reflecting on their own progress and teachers have been monitoring the progress of each student in their class and will share the progress with you during the interviews.
With warm regards,
Mrs Reyhan Er
Primary School Coordinator
National Pyjama Day was celebrated at our school on Friday, 1 September. Students were encouraged to dress in their favourite pyjamas to school and make a donation towards the Year 6 graduation.

How Long Are My Objects?
Students from KA were very engaged in a Mathematics activity as they learned the concept of ‘Length’. They were asked to measure objects around them using connectable cubes. The students really enjoyed themselves and were able to understand the concept of estimating how many cubes long their items were and then finding the actual measurements to see if they were correct.
Activities such as this will help children to understand what informal units of measurement are, and how they can be used to measure objects. This will increase their understanding of measurements and will help them develop their fine motor skills too. Well done KA!

Let’s Move!
KC students have been very busy putting recycling materials together as they construct a moving object that relates to our science topic ‘Things that move’. Students were asked to complete a project from home and present it to the class, here are some wonderful, completed projects by our KC members.
Project-based learning encourages children to become more independent and take on greater responsibility for their learning, the first step to lifelong learning. By enticing them to be excited about furthering their knowledge about topics they are learning and fostering a love for learning, they remain active in seeking new skills and information. Well done KC!

Book Character Parade & Pyjama Day
Hello families! We’ve had a fantastic few weeks at school. We’ve been up to many exciting activities that have kept the joy of learning alive and well.
Year 1 had a blast dressing up as book characters and marching in the annual book parade. We all loved seeing the fantastic costumes students dressed up in to match their favourite book characters.
We've also been collaborating with groups in class to learn our school values like respect and excellence. Students have been working together to design posters reflecting these core values.
Finally, we celebrated pyjama day where everyone came to school dressed up in their favourite pyjamas to raise money for the Year 6 farewell. We all had a great time.

Book Character Week!
Last week we celebrated Book Character Week! It was very exciting and fun for the children to wear their favourite book character costumes and show it to others. We also organised a Book Character parade where every class walked with their teacher in the courts to show their costumes to others. One of each grade won a prize, all the others got a Participation Certificate. After that, we had a yummy lunch and ate all the food that we brought to school to share with others. We read some stories and watched the movie ‘Aladdin’.

Let’s Explore!
The Year 3 students had an amazing time on their recent excursion to the Carrs Park Bush Park! They were so excited to dive into the day's activities, which included bug catching – you should have seen their faces light up when they found those little critters. They also got to unleash their creativity by making habitats for beach animals, and it was heartwarming to see how much they cared about providing a safe space for those creatures. And let's not forget the bushwalking adventure, where they learned firsthand how important it is to take care of our environment. It was a day of discovery, fun, and some important life lessons about the world around us.

The students of Year 3A were totally engrossed in a game that delved into the fascinating world of light rays and how they bounce off surfaces. What made it even more exciting was that the game had different levels, which really tested their understanding of this concept. As they progressed through the levels, you could see the wheels turning in their heads as they figured out the complicated patterns of light reflection. It was both a fun and educational experience that pushed them to think critically and develop a deeper grasp of how light behaves.

Clifton Gardens
We're thrilled to share the exciting journey 4B students recently embarked on, an adventure to Clifton Gardens. Students dived headfirst into the captivating world of forces. From the gentlest friction to the irresistible pull of gravity, the intriguing mysteries of air pressure to the enchanting forces of magnetism, our students delved into it all, making this a truly hands-on and interactive day amidst the natural beauty of the great outdoors. The day began with an enthralling presentation, where the students got to witness their peers donning scientific safety gear and actively participating in demonstrations that showcased the incredible power of forces. Liquid nitrogen experiments left everyone mesmerised as objects soared through the air, leaving an indelible impression of forces at play.
Throughout this engaging presentation, our young scientists observed and described how contact and non-contact forces influence an object's motion, and how push and pull forces can bring about changes in speed, direction, and force. The day was packed with activities like concocting gooey mystery matter, launching air rockets and zipping through billy cart races. In the true spirit of inquiry-based learning, our students questioned, planned, and conducted their scientific investigations, deepening their understanding of how energy serves as a vital resource. As they explored various props and tools, they saw firsthand how forces and materials interact within products or systems.

Parliamentary Education Office
I hope that all students have been having an amazing week and are excited for the last 2 weeks of the term. Students from years five and six were lucky enough to participate in two incursions for Science by Ranger Jamie and History about the Parliament House by the Parliamentary Education Office. Students for science were able to actively engage by working as a team to build a small windmill and create a solar oven using recycled material. Ranger Jamie spoke about the different types of energy that are reflected in society using wind and solar energy. The Parliamentary Education office spoke about the structure and purpose of the Parliament House. Students were given the opportunity to actively participate by building their own parliament house during the incursion. These opportunities allow students to interact with external learning activities that allow them to build their critical and creative thinking skills by participating in front of their peers as volunteers for the exhibition.
Pyjama Day
Students on Friday the 1st of September enjoyed Pyjama Day as a fundraiser that year 6 students had organised as a fundraiser idea for the year 6 graduation. Students were creative in coming in different Pyjamas that were both creative and cozy.
Here are some photos of students participating in the Incursion.

Term 3 Science Incursion
On the 24th of August, Stage 3 students took part in an exciting and action-packed learning experience for Science. We started the incursion with an engaging presentation that involved a huge explosion (see photos) using liquid nitrogen to launch over 200 ping-pong balls into the air. Students spent 2 hours investigating how electrical energy can control movement with a range of STEM-based activities and challenges. They observed energy transformations taking place as the rangers demonstrated how electrical energy can be transferred and transformed. They spent time working with their peers to build their own electrical circuits, solar ovens and wind turbines to develop solutions. Students thoroughly enjoyed this incursion as they enthusiastically motivated as they investigated and discovered how electricity can be used in a product while designing, testing and evaluation their own designs.
Parliament Visit
Last week, students participated in a parliament education incursion where they learned about the foundations of democracy and participated in an interactive federal election voting role play. They engaged in a house of representatives debate to illustrate how bills become laws.
Pyjama Day
Students enjoyed coming to school in their pyjamas on the 1st of September. This fundraiser event at our school was a cosy and heart-warming event that brought our entire school community together. To foster a culture of wellness and smart choices, one must be cautious of the food they consume. We encourage our parents to promote healthy eating habits and reduce sugar intake in student lunchboxes. A well-balanced diet lays the foundation for optimal physical and mental development. By incorporating a variety of nutrient-rich foods, we provide our students with the essential vitamins, minerals, and energy they need to excel in their studies and activities.
We understand the convenience of pre-packaged snacks, but we encourage you to explore alternatives that prioritise nutrition without compromising taste. Fresh fruits, crunchy vegetables, whole-grain sandwiches, and lean protein sources offer a delightful array of options. By reducing sugar-laden foods, we can help prevent energy crashes and maintain a steady focus throughout the day. Opt for fresh fruits, yogurt with no added sugars, and homemade treats made with natural sweeteners like honey or fruit puree.

Maarif students are expected to wear their Summer school uniform during Term 1. Please be reminded of the importance of naming all items of school uniform with your child’s name and class. This means that lost items found around school can easily be returned.
We consider that uniform is important for several reasons.
- It provides pupils with a sense of identity and pride in their school.
- It enhances the appearance of pupils and therefore the reputation of the school.
- It helps to instil a sense of purpose in pupils when they put on their uniform in the mornings.
- It helps overcome the worry about “fitting in” with fashions and keeping up with other children. All children feel equal and there is no stress, competition or worry for families about expensive brands/labels.
- It overcomes the problem for both parents and teachers about what is suitable attire for school.
We request that our parents and/or carers are extra cautious during school drop off and pick up times.
Please ensure NSW Government rules regarding road safety are being followed and adhered to at all times.
This means:
- Respecting the road rules and signs, and driving within the speed limit of 40km/h in a school zone.
- Parking safely in designated parking areas or in drop off/pick up zones.
- No double parking, as it is dangerous and illegal.
- Three point turns and U-turns are not permitted in school zones, as not only is it dangerous for students and other vehicles but also causes traffic congestion.
- Follow the directions of our school crossing supervisors.
- Give way to our School Bus drivers.
Thank you for your cooperation.
According to ACARA National Standards for student attendance, parents are required to complete an Application for Leave Form for holidays within the school term or other leave. Applications should be submitted 14 days prior to the leave. The Principal approves this leave as appropriate.
For all student leave requests (1-50 days) an application form should be submitted to the school at least 14 days prior to the requested leave date. Supporting documentation, such as travel ticket or itinerary, should be included with student holiday leave applications.
Holidays taken by students outside of School vacation periods are included as absences.
Families are encouraged to holiday or travel during school vacations rather than in term time. If travel during the school term is necessary, the following considerations apply:
- If the Principal accepts the reason for the absence, the absence will be marked as justified leave.
- If the Principal does not believe the absence is in the student’s best interests and does not accept the reason, the absence will be recorded as unjustified leave.
