Dear Parents and Carers
I wanted to take a moment to talk to you about Positive Behavioural Interventions and Supports (PBIS), an approach we are implementing in our school to promote a positive and inclusive learning environment.
PBIS is a proactive framework that focuses on teaching and reinforcing positive behaviours, rather than simply reacting to negative behaviours. It is based on the belief that all students can learn appropriate behaviours and that by providing clear expectations, consistent support, and meaningful rewards, we can create a school culture that fosters academic and social success for all students.
In our PBIS program, we have identified a set of behavioural expectations that we want all students to follow. These expectations are communicated to students through explicit teaching and are consistently reinforced in all areas of the school. By setting clear expectations and providing specific examples of desired behaviours, we empower our students to make positive choices and take responsibility for their actions.
PBIS also emphasizes the importance of recognising and reinforcing positive behaviour. We have implemented a system of rewards which are our Maarif Values cards and acknowledgments to celebrate students who consistently demonstrate the expected behaviours. This helps to create a positive and motivating atmosphere where students feel valued and encouraged to continue making good choices.
We believe that PBIS is a powerful tool in promoting a safe and respectful learning environment. However, we also recognise that it takes a collaborative effort between home and school to achieve the best results. We encourage you to reinforce the PBIS expectations and values at home, and to discuss with your child the importance of following these guidelines both inside and outside of school.
We greatly appreciate your support in this endeavour and look forward to working together to create a positive and nurturing environment for all our students. We previously shared our school’s PBIS behaviour flowchart, behaviour expectations matrix, values and reflect and restore cards via email. If you have any questions or would like more information about our PBIS program, please don't hesitate to reach out to us.
Additionally, we are delighted to inform you that International Maarif Schools of Australia will be participating in the world-renowned International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) assessments again this year.
ICAS is designed to target students’ higher-order thinking and problem-solving skills in English, Mathematics, Spelling, Science, Writing and Digital Technologies.
Each assessment celebrates students’ accomplishments by providing opportunities for recognition and development. Every student will receive a printed certificate and an online results report. Top performers will be eligible for medals and are invited to attend special award ceremonies to have their academic excellence publicly recognised.
Kind regards,
Dr Zeynep Yaseen
Principal

'Personal Voices'
This term, students are studying a unit called ‘Personal Voices’, which focuses on the ways in which texts can be used to project and amplify a personal voice. Students are engaging with a range of text types such as speeches, poems and autobiographies to analyse how language, structure and techniques can create meaning and allow audiences to understand and empathise with the author’s opinion or perspective. This term’s learning will culminate in the creation and presentation of a speech, in which students will have the chance to project their own ‘personal voice’.
Creative Writing Workshop
Last week, year 8 and 9 students attended a creative writing workshop at Parramatta Library, facilitated by author of ‘The F Team’ Rawah Arja. The day was highly successful, with students expanding their creative minds to learn strategies and skills to help them translate thoughts to writing. The students were engaged and eager to participate, with many students volunteering to read out their work throughout the day. The workshop was a great way to remind students that English and writing can be fun and can allow them to explore new themes and ways of thinking.

Financial Mathematics
This term, students will be working towards building up their knowledge, skills and strategies of the concepts studied in class to complete the Mid-Year Examination. Parents and Caregivers are advised to be conscious of the due dates and support their students to ensure a smooth implementation. Years 7 and 9 will have their Mathematics Exam in Week 6, while Year 8 is expected to have their exam in Week 7. It is vital that students bring their Calculators to class and use them during examinations.
In this newsletter, we bring you snapshots of work samples of Year 9 PowerPoint investigation on Financial Mathematics where the students have used their research skills to explain key terms and created unique and complex questions with worked solutions.

Exploring the Wonders of Science: The Living World, Classification of Living Things, and Ecosystems
Greetings, students and parents of Maarif! It's time to dive into the fascinating realm of science once again. This term, our year 7, 8, and 9 students are embarking on an exciting journey to explore the living world, delve into the classification of living things, and unravel the intricate dynamics of ecosystems.
The living world is a captivating subject that helps us understand the rich tapestry of life on our planet. In these early years of high school, students have the opportunity to expand their knowledge and develop a deeper appreciation for the diversity of living organisms that surround us. From microscopic bacteria to towering trees, from agile insects to majestic mammals, our students will learn about the characteristics, adaptations, and life processes of various organisms.
By delving into the living world, classification of living things, and ecosystems, our year 7, 8, and 9 students are embarking on an awe-inspiring journey that will shape their understanding of the natural world and its intricate systems. We encourage parents to support their children's scientific curiosity by engaging in discussions, visiting local natural sites, or watching nature documentaries together.
Let's nurture the next generation of scientists, environmentalists, and curious minds as they uncover the wonders of the living world and unravel the secrets of our incredible ecosystems. Together, we can inspire a lifelong love for science and cultivate a deeper appreciation for the beauty and complexity of our planet.
Happy exploring!
