Kindergarten have been busy engaging in interesting and enjoyable learning experiences. They have been building on their knowledge, skills and understanding in each Key Learning Area. Students have particularly enjoyed technology lessons where they had opportunities to create illustrations as part of their literacy unit. They are happy to have met their new class teacher Mrs Julie Brennan.

Year 1 students cut out different shapes on the paper to place on the window glass and see the light come shining through with a pattern. They really enjoyed this experience and wanted to make more patterns. This experience allowed them to refine their fine motor skills and practise their coordination in addition to understanding the different ways light can enter a room, well done Year 1.

Students were given the opportunity to measure the length of the letters of their first and last names using mini coloured paddle pop sticks. They counted and compared which names had the most sticks. This experience allowed them to understand the concept of measuring items and comparing the different sizes of length.

Students were asked to do a mini project designing their bedrooms. They used shoeboxes and other cardboard materials to make cupboards, chairs, tables, and other items in their bedrooms. They presented these 3D models to the class explaining how they put it altogether, we enjoyed listening to each student’s speech. Students will use this for their Ooshies to role play and use their imagination during play time. Fantastic job Year 1 students.

Year 1 students used their creative skills to make figures of animals on a relaxing afternoon. They were able to use their fine motor abilities to roll, cut, press and poke the dough to make all sorts of different shapes and sizes. Well done year 1.

Year 2 students have been exploring the concept of ‘Fractions’ in Mathematics. Students were given the opportunity to use playdough to demonstrate their understanding of halves, quarters and eighths.

In Maths, students have also been exploring the concept of ‘Three and Two-Dimensional Shapes’ in Mathematics. Students used a range of methods to demonstrate their understanding of applying shapes within different environments.

Mr Rachad El-Sabeh
Year 2 Teacher
Year 3 students learnt all about the square metre.
Students worked in pairs to estimate the size of a square metre by marking it on the playground. We also took the chance to make predictions about how many students would be able to fit in a square metre.

Year 3 has been learning how to establish a growth mindset and how any student can have this skill. Students were able to reflect on some of the challenges they have had to face and think about how they could overcome those challenges. Being persistent, resilient and asking for help were some of the strategies discussed to overcome challenges.

For Geography, Year 3 have been learning all about climate, including how weather contributes to climate, major climate zones and the comparison of climates in different places. Students completed a task where they researched information about the climate of Sydney and Ankara and interpreted the data, discussing the similarities and differences between both places.

Year 3 have been learning how to identify and describe patterns using symbols and diagrams. Students used paddle pop sticks to create their own increasing and decreasing pattern sequences, then found the rule. Students were also given challenges where they were required to find the rule of a pattern and complete the next pattern in the sequence.

In Personal Development and Health, Year 4 is focusing on bullying and how it affects people. We shared our stories with the class and explained how they overcome their bullies. Students created posters asking for their rights. They all had the starter as ‘I have a right ..’ and they came up with the charter of rights for the students of International Maarif School of Australia. It was a highly engaging activity and interesting posters were produced.

Students engaged in Maths activities using iPad's practising their Mathematics skills. It was very engaging and students worked effectively together.

Year 4 have been recognised for their neat handwriting and started getting their pen licences. They felt very motivated and other students are working towards getting theirs.

Students of Year 4 focused on Length for Maths this week. They had an interesting task of flying their paper plane and measuring the length of how far it flew. This activity helped them to work in pairs and use trundle wheels. Students were engaged and thoroughly enjoyed this activity.

Year 4 Teacher
Year 5 were excited to create composite shapes using playdough and paddle-pop sticks. Instead of drawing the shapes, they were able to create and model their knowledge to show the concepts of measuring area of composite shapes. The students needed to identify smaller regular shapes within the larger shape to accurately measure the area using the formula l x w (length x width).
As Year 5 continue to explore the attributes of ‘light’, they engaged in a lesson on ‘reflection’. After conducting an experiment to test the theory of the angle of incidence being the same as the angle of reflection. Once the children understood this concept, the students took the lesson outside to use the sun and their knowledge of angles and reflection to aim at targets in the playground.

In Mathematics, students have been working on understanding the relation between fractions and decimals. We started by using fractions based on 100 as the whole to easily convert to decimals. Once students understood the relationship and were able to successfully convert fractions to decimals and vice versa, we started looking at any number and finding common multiples to find the lowest possible fraction representation.
Year 5 has been engaging in Gymnastics and Music lessons delivered by specialist teachers. Over the weeks, students have improved in their movement and appreciating and play of musical instruments. However, the highlight has been their growth in maturity and responsibility when engaging in these lessons. Year 5 have made the most of their time and as a result have ensured they are walking away with new skills.
In small groups, students created Periscopes using cardboard boxes and mirrors. They applied their scientific knowledge of the concepts relative to light to successfully create the periscope ensuring light was able to reflect from the source to their eye travelling in a straight line yet through a course within their box. Students were engaged, participated and contributed fairly within their groups. It’s great to see their knowledge and skills from over the term come to life in the form of a Periscope.

Year 1 and Year 2
Alhamdulillah for everything.
Years 1 and 2 have been learning on ways to have good manners this term and one important character is “Thanking Allah”. We Thank Allah by saying “Alhamdulillah”, and students chose only one of Allahs many blessings and designed a poster to showcase this. It included a photo and handwriting of why this is so important to them. Also adding how they will be thanking Allah for this wonderful blessing. Well done years 1 and 2 for your beautiful projects. The posters the students have designed will be displayed in their classrooms, so that others can see and be reminded of Allah’s many blessings He has given us.
Year 3 and Year 4
Lets sign an important contract.
Year 3 & 4 students this term have been learning about good manners including the importance of “Kindness”. They learnt about Allah’s kindness towards us and that we need to practice kindness towards others. After explaining to students what a contract is, students then completed their own “Kindness Contract” which included how they will be treating their teachers and fellow peers. They also signed the bottom, so they know it’s now a binding agreement between us. Well done students for writing and accepting your very first contract.
