The Student Leadership Team at Maarif meet with Mr Muhammed to discuss matters that involve students. These students are leaders in the classroom and the playground, leading by example, supporting and encouraging their fellow peers.

Exploring Story Plots
Kindergarten students really enjoyed listening to the story “The little Red Riding Hood”. Followed by this activity, they were given the opportunity to identify the characters, setting, relationships and tension in the story. It was great to see their vocabulary expanding and they had fun completing the worksheet. This also allowed the students to understand the story, and then work on identifying the components listed on the worksheet. Well done KA!

Origami Grumble Boats
Read-aloud sessions can provide opportunities for further exploration of concepts and ideas. Elifsu Cifci bought a wonderful book to share with our class titled ‘Grumble Boats’ by Susannah Mcflarlane and Tamsin Ainslie. The key theme in this book involves emotions and how one can express negative feelings appropriately and through beautiful and practical means. Our discussions were fruitful as we considered the power of nature to help us feel better as well as the role of grandparents in our lives as teachers and friends.
Our discussions were followed by an origami boat making activity which Emma, the main character, also creates in the story to express her grumpiness!

Little Scientists
Year 1 students have enjoyed participating in a range of science activities involving materials. Students investigated what happens when different materials are mixed. Students enjoyed making playdough and seeing the results come together.
Mrs Rooba El-Sayed
Fractions
Year 2 has begun learning about fractions. An engaging activity they participated in, was the cutting and pasting of animals who were to have a picnic, they then had to share the foods in halves, quarters, or eighths. The students had a blast doing this activity and showcased their impressive knowledge of fractions and sharing.

Fraction Pizzas
Year 3 students have been learning about fractions. They engaged in different activities aimed to develop their understanding of recognising and describing fractions of objects and collections as halves, thirds, quarters, fifths and eighths. Our favourite activity involved making pizza fractions where students had to follow a recipe using their knowledge of fractions. Well done to all students on their outstanding efforts.

Typing Master
Typing on laptop is a skill that everybody desires to grasp in this contemporary era. Students of Year four are learning to master this talent. By getting to know this skill, they could enhance their focus, keep time, and comprehend the ability that is required for future. Students had been given time to devise their narrative earlier than typing on laptop. This became an engaging and learning experience that they genuinely enjoyed.

Question Time
Year 4 is reading ‘James and the Giant peach’ in their Guided Reading Lessons. They find it interesting and engaging. To assess their understanding, students answer the questions for the chapter they have read. Students are highly engaged in the reading process and demonstrate a deep understanding of the text.

Drip. Drip. Drip.
Year 5 have had a couple of productive weeks. As part of the Science unit, students have been looking at the definitions and attribute of solids, liquids and gasses. To extend beyond the definitions and testing objects, students looked at the viscosity of certain liquids. Students worked in small groups, squeezing different liquids into a bowl with a race to make it to the bottom. Students relied heavily on collaboration and communication and worked really well.

FREEZE! Frame
As part of Drama this term, students have looked closely at mime in the form of freeze frames and script writing. Students worked in small groups and had to choose three to four scenes of either a story they knew or a story they would write. They acted out their scene and the ‘freeze frame’ of that scene would be the visual prompt for their writing. As a class, we had many laughs and it was wonderful to see the students stepping out of their comfort zone to act in front of their peers.

Refugee Voices
During our history lessons this term, students have really begun to understand the extent of hardships many migrants and refugees go through to call Australia home. With many students having family members who made the trip to our great country, students spend this week’s history lesson reading about others who have come to Australia in pursuit of a better life. Students read two refugee stories and compared their experiences; the hardship and the triumphs. Students showed empathy and a greater understanding and appreciation of the lives they live here in Australia.

Ready, set, inflate!
As part of our Term 2 Science program, Year 6 students took part in another experiment last week where we got the chance to inflate a balloon via air particles produced by chemical reactions as well as make Oobleck from corn starch to understand tis properties. Students were able to choose which experiment they wanted to write a scientific report on for their portfolio tasks! We focused on different variables and hypothesised the results based on different factors.
Here are some photos from our experiment lesson!

Informative writing!
This term we are focusing on a form of non-fiction writing - informative writing and we cannot wait to inform you! We have been focusing on the multicultural aspects of Australia in our reports. Here are some photos of our class working on their writing.

Students had the opportunity to participate in many fun and exciting activities such as bushwalking, playing team games and archery, putting helmets and harnesses on for the zipline activity, campfire cooking as well as sharing a story around campfire. Students all had an amazing time whilst enhancing their social skills development and learning in a non-school setting.
A special thank you to the accompanying staff and parents, who gave generously of their time to be with our students!

Dear Parents/Carers,
Maarif students are expected to wear their winter school uniform during Terms 2 and 3. Please be reminded of the importance of naming all items of school uniform with your child’s name and class. This means that lost items found around school can easily be returned.
Uniform Shop will be open every Wednesday during school term from 2:30pm to 3:30pm.
We consider that uniform is important for several reasons.
- It provides pupils with a sense of identity and pride in their school.
- It enhances the appearance of pupils and therefore the reputation of the school.
- It helps to instil a sense of purpose in pupils when they put on their uniform in the mornings.
- It helps overcome the worry about “fitting in” with fashions and keeping up with other children. All children feel equal and there is no stress, competition or worry for families about expensive brands/labels.
- It overcomes the problem for both parents and teachers about what is suitable attire for school.
