Musical beat
KA students practiced doing the beat to various songs using the musical instruments. This allowed them to also identify the names of the instruments. They really enjoyed this task as they chose which instruments, they wanted to play and played it loud and fast.
Allowing students to explore instruments helps them with brain development particularly with language, speech, listening and reading skills. It also helps with sensory development and refines fine and gross motor skills. Students were able to build on their confidence as they all took turns playing to the beat of the song in front of the class.

Potato People
Our exploration of the book ‘The Potato People’ by Pamela Allen was an exciting one! This book allowed us to explore the relationship between grandparents and grandchildren as well as how potatoes grow.
The main characters in the story decide to make people potatoes together. This inspired our activity where kindergartners created their own unique potato person using craft materials. As part of our read-aloud, students were encouraged to ask questions relating to the deep love between grandmother and grandson as well as the life cycle of a potato.
Read-aloud is an instructional practice where the teacher reads a text out loud for students to listen to. Reading aloud is a significant practice as it introduces new vocabulary and provides a model for fluent, expressive reading. It also encourages children to recognize what reading for pleasure is all about!

Which one is heavier?
In Maths students have been learning about Mass. Students used the technique of hefting to heft two objects to determine the heaviest object. Students recorded their findings on a whiteboard and discussed their results with the class.

In PE students enjoyed learning and practicing their soccer skills, students focused on the correct technique for passing the ball and stopping the ball. Students worked well together enjoying a range of different group challenges. Students finished off the lesson by enjoying a friendly game of soccer.

Split Strategy
Year 2 have been revising and practicing their split strategy skills. We used the smartboard to solve addition and subtraction equations using the split strategy method. Here students had the chance to come up to the board and attempt questions with direct teacher support. This method helps students have a more hands on approach, while also acting as a learning opportunity to peers that may be watching.

Melting Madness
Year 3 are continuing to learn about the different States of Matter. This week, students participated in an experiment which aimed to show how adding heat can change a solid to a liquid. They watched closely as we glued a set of crayons to a canvas and used a hair dryer to add heat. Students made predictions about which colour would melt first and how long it would take for all colours to melt completely. Students thoroughly enjoyed this lesson.

Is it sizzling or not?
Story writing is a skill that requires a lot of practice. Year 4 students practice writing prominently in seven writing steps. We focus on creating Sizzling Starts that will catch the reader's attention. The students did a great job in pairs and had managed to develop a creative flow of ideas around the classroom. They are all very proud of their learning.

Solid or Liquid!
Students in Science are learning about various states of matter and their properties. This week, students had the opportunity to investigate the differences between solid and liquid using corn flour and water. They recorded their findings working in three students per group. It was an excellent learning opportunity for the students.

Maritime Museum Excursion
Year 5 and 6 students were fortunate to be able to venture out on an excursion to the Maritime Museum to deepen their knowledge on the migration journey of many past and present Australians. Students consolidated the knowledge of ‘push’ and ‘pull’ factors under the categories of political, economic, social, and environmental factors. Students heard stories of individuals that had travelled across the seas in the hope of calling Australia home. These stories varied from tragedies to triumphs and our students realised that it wasn’t always an easy feat.
With so many students having multicultural background, it was great to see and hear students making connections to their own family’s migration story. Year 5 and 6 students were able to discover stories of the individuals through tangible experiences such as piecing together a life story by investigating bits and pieces in a suitcase. The students not only were able to handle historical possessions, but they were also able to try clothing on to empathise with the character/individuals they were researching. Year 5 were engaged and showed enthusiasm throughout the day.

Migration Stories
As part of our history unit, Year 5 and 6 students visited the Maritime Museum on the 20th of May 2022 where we discovered stories of groups of people who migrated to Australia and the reasons, they migrated such as World War II and Australian migration programs since the war. Students were able to understand the contributions of individuals and groups and the ways they assisted with the development of Australian society for example in areas such as the economy, education, sciences, the arts, and sports.
Students were able to empathise with certain social groups that migrated to Australia during a specific time. They enjoyed dressing up as them and solving clues with items in each suitcase and relive moments they experienced and understand the hardships endured. The students had an educational experience during this excursion and displayed great behaviour and Maarif values.

Istanbulun Fethi Kutlu Olsun!
This week we commemorated the 569th anniversary of the conquest of Istanbul.
The Prophet Muhammad said: "Istanbul will definitely be conquered. What a great commander is the commander who conquers it, what a great army that army is."
In recognition of this victory, the 21-year-old ruler was thereafter known as Mehmed the Conqueror (Fatih Sultan Mehmet)
Maarif students watched the conquest video (İstanbul'un Fethi 569. Yıl - YouTube ),
read a text about conquest of Istanbul and listened the march of conquest (Fetih Marşı - YouTube) while they were doing a coded painting activity on the topic.

Bu ne?
Kindergarten students are learning classroom items with many activities.
In Turkish class, a secret bag was shown to class, and they were asked to guess what was in it. After a few suggestions students were told they were each going to take something out of the bag. When they took the items out, they showed it to everyone as they were asked the question ‘Bu ne?’

Lets speak Turkish
Kindergarten started using books in Turkish classes. They continue to learn words with Turkish books. They mark the correct pictures with simple instructions and reinforce new words with games. Our new goal is to improve our Turkish by making short sentences and improve our speaking skills.
Nasrettin Hoca
Year 3 and 4 learned Nasreddin Hodja in Turkish classes. Nasreddin Hodja is an important character in Turkish culture. They watched the Hodja’s cartoon, talked about what he is doing and listened to his story. Year 3 and 4 continues to work on their writing and reading skills. They are doing exercises about Turkish characters and their phonetics.

Assalamu Alaikum wa rahmetullahi wa barakatuh,
All praise be to Allah (SWT) and may peace and blessings be upon His beloved Prophet Muhammad (SAW), his family, companions and to all those who follow him.
Our Year 2 Students are focusing on the topic of ‘The Five Pillars of Islam’ (Weekend Learning Series Islamic Studies Textbook). Our students have now learnt the steps and acts of wudu, the names of the 5 daily prayers. Students watched Zacky on the smartboard explaining the importance of the 5 daily prayers. Students completed the activity tasks, and we went through the answers together as a whole class.

Quran Lessons
Year 4 students are now seeking two periods a week of Qur’an lessons. Year 4 students have weekly assigned homework pages recorded in their ‘Qur’an student record book’. A This way both Teacher and Parent can monitor and keep track of the work. Previously, a letter was sent to all parents regarding Qur’an lessons with the ‘Qur’an Alif Ba App Link’, please download this App onto your device so it can help your child when practicing at home. All Year 4 students are memorising Surah Quraysh this term and will be assessed on this in week 7 and 8.
The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said,
"The best among you are those who learn the Qur’an and teach it."
We pray that Allah (SWT) allows our students to keep the Qur’an in the centre of their lives and let the Book of Allah be the light of their hearts.

Dear Parents/Carers
Maarif students are expected to wear their winter school uniform during Terms 2 and 3. Please can we also remind you of the importance of naming all items of school uniform with your child’s name and class. This means that lost items found around school can easily be returned.
Uniform Shop will be open every Wednesday during school term from 2:30pm to 3:30pm.
We consider that uniform is important for several reasons.
- It provides pupils with a sense of identity and pride in their school.
- It enhances the appearance of pupils and therefore the reputation of the school.
- It helps to instil a sense of purpose in pupils when they put on their uniform in the mornings.
- It helps overcome the worry about “fitting in” with fashions and keeping up with other children. All children feel equal and there is no stress, competition or worry for families about expensive brands/labels.
- It overcomes the problem for both parents and teachers about what is suitable attire for school.
