Our Maarif School Counsellor Mrs Dilek Uzun Serdal is now available to assist students and their families. School counsellor offers individual counselling to help students resolve personal or interpersonal problems. She may also offer small group counselling to help students enhance listening and social skills, learn to empathise with others, and find social support through healthy peer relationships.
Parents or carers may seek advice from school counsellors about their child’s school progress, educational options, including access to special education services, behaviour and for information about help available from other agencies.
Confidentiality
School counselling is a confidential service and school counsellors will check with students, parents, or carers before passing on information (such as the results of tests of learning difficulties) to others. Confidentiality will be maintained unless legal requirements, e.g. child protection legislation, override it. Nor will confidentiality be maintained where someone may suffer serious harm from information being withheld.
Referral
Our school counsellor is at school on Wednesdays and Thursdays. It is necessary for parents or carers to make an appointment by telephoning the school. Students will be told of the arrangements applying in our school as to how they can see the school counsellor. Priorities for the school counsellor’s time will be determined, in consultation with the school counsellor, by the principal.

“I am a dinosaur- ROAR!”
KA students had so much fun cutting out dinosaur faces and using them as masks so they can role play characters as dinosaurs during their drama lesson. This lesson allowed them to use their imagination to be other things as well as has become familiar with the names of the different dinosaur names.
Dramatization is the most significant model and basic activity for learning. It helps children to think about their individual and social surroundings. Children can learn to explore issues, events and connections, by means of drama or role play.

Let’s Think Like Scientists!
Nature provides countless opportunities for discovery, creativity and problem-solving. As part of our topic ‘Material World’ Kindergarten participated in a nature walk around the school to identify and explore different materials and their observable properties. Interacting with natural environments allows children to learn by questioning and experimenting with different ideas.
As part of our exploration, students collected hard and soft materials and engaged in discussions relating to their characteristics.
This investigation spanned over the course of different lessons and concluded with students demonstrating their understanding by drawing in their science books!

In Maths Year 1 have been learning about collecting and representing data. Students collected data on Year 1’s favourite desserts. Students learnt the importance of using tally marks to track data collected and then represented data. Here are our favourite desserts, can you spot the dessert with the most votes?

In PDH we have been learning about making healthy choices, students enjoyed creating fruit and vegetable faces. This lesson was a cross-curriculum lesson where Creative Arts was combined with PDH. Students work was inspired by the art of Giuseppe Arcimboldo (1526-1593).

A massive congratulations to Malik Duran and Muhammad Kowaider for displaying confidence and leading the Week 3 Assembly for our K-6 Weekly Assembly.

Ooblek Fun!
This term for science, Year 3 students have been exploring the different states of matter. Apart of our learning has involved students classifying things as solids, liquids or gasses. Students engaged in an exciting science experiment where they made their own sample of ooblek which is a substance made from corn flour and water. They made predictions on what would occur when both ingredients are mixed together and were able to conclude that sometimes the ooblek behaved like a solid and sometimes it behaved like a liquid, depending on how it was handled. Year 3 students highly enjoyed this hands-on experience!

Tech time!
Year 4 students are working on creating 3D objects with the online tool Tinker CAD. They were experimenting with different 3D objects; it was a lesson that students enjoyed and learned a lot about creating 3D objects.

Experimenting with Matter
This week, students engaged in experiments to prove an object or substance was a solid, liquid or gas. We started the lesson by looking at a Soda Stream and understanding that Carbon Dioxide (gas) shows as bubbles in water. The students were able to feel the pressure of the gas exertion from the gas cylinder. They were then given a range of materials to test the theory of matter having mass and showing this through varied experiments; using air in a syringe to blow bubbles in water to mixing bicarbonate soda with vinegar and seeing the bubbles of gas rise. The students were engaged and the students that were able to collaboratively make decisions and problem-solve were able to prove the theory in many ways.

Year 5 NAPLAN
Congratulations to all Year 5 students for working to the best of their ability and completing the NAPLAN tests. It was the first year NAPLAN was completed in all aspects online and also in a progressive format. Year 5 handled the tests with grace, and they should be very proud of themselves for being patient and putting in all their effort. A wonderful approach Year 5, well done!

Cooling down air!
During science students were provided with the time to observe the condensation of water vapor in the air into liquid water on a cold surface. After watching an animation on the process, we decided to do a practical investigation to have a hands on experience. We gathered all the materials required and compared the way our measuring glass looked in room temperature compared to when we added ice cubes and two teaspoons of salt with a few drops of food colouring. Students observed the glass cup carefully for a few minutes and were provided with the chance to feel outside the glass and the tiny droplets that represented water vapour transforming into liquid water on a cold surface. They recorded results from the experiment and explained the process of cooling down air!

Let’s get informative!
In our English lessons this term students are learning to write different styles of informative texts. For this we have been working as a whole class to identify specific language features required to write an informative text. Students were required to colour code and identify language features provided to them in sample texts. They did so well throughout these lessons and I cannot wait to read their own pieces soon.

Its good to have goals!
Students were able to enjoy some sun this week during our PE lesson. After multiple days of rain we were so happy to be out on the courts. Students were warmed up and after a quick soccer drill we decided to play a friendly game together as a class. Some great sportsmanship was displayed by the entire class on this day, well done!

Learning Colours
Kindergarten students learnt colours in Turkish with many activities. They listened to songs and found the objects in the classroom with the colours. They played online games with the topic and did colouring activities according to instructions.
Also, the books, ‘Renkler Kitabım’ and “Balonlar’ were prepared for students. They enjoyed reading the books.

Our feelings
Year 3 & 4 Students were given the opportunity to talk about their past experiences explaining how they felt in certain situations.

Turkish Lessons - with Miss Esra Pamuk
Kindergarten students started to use their new activity books ‘El ele 1’. With this book, they learn numbers, colours, shapes and more. They listen carefully to their teachers' explanations and complete their activities. Kindergarten also improves their vocabulary by learning Turkish songs.
All the students in the Turkish Folk Dance team, learn Turkish with Ms. Pamuk. Students hear the words about directions, music and shapes which helps them to learn while having fun. Also, they are having daily conversations in Turkish during these practices.

Kindergarten is learning about always doing good actions, saying nice things and the importance of giving charity. Charity does not always have to be with money- even ‘Smiling is a Charity’!.
Students are also learning to read the Quran. In our Quran lessons they are practicing saying the name of the letters followed by the sound each letter makes when there is a ‘harakat’ above or below it. (Short vowel marks). For example: Letter Alif is the name of a letter but when Alif has a Fatha harakat on it would make the sound “AA”. Below is a short video of what we have been completing in our lessons.
Activity time!
I did an activity with year 1 to try get them thinking ‘is this connected to any of the pillars of Islam?’. Each student was given a photo/clipart picture which they had a minute to think about before having the opportunity to put them on the whiteboard which had the headings “Shahadah, Pray, Zakat, Fasting and Haj’. They had fun running up to the board when I called out the pillar so they can hang up their pictures on the correct pillar. Well done to Year 1 as I had a look after all the items were put on the board and they were all under the correct pillar names mashallah! Below is a short video of what we did in our lesson

Assalamu Alaikum wa rahmetullahi wa barakatuh,
All praise be to Allah (SWT) and may peace and blessings be upon His beloved Prophet Muhammad (SAW), his family, companions and to all those who follow him.
Our Year 5 Students are focusing on the topic of ‘The Salah’ (Weekend Learning Series Islamic Studies Textbook). Our students have now learnt the steps and acts of wudu, the acts of ‘fard and sunnah’ as well as when and how to make Tayammum ‘Dry Ablution’. Students completed the activity tasks, and we went through the answers together as a whole class.
For Year 5 Qur’an Studies, students are practising, and memorising the Dua Qunoot 1. All Year 5 students have weekly Qur’an recitation homework assigned and recorded in their ‘Qur’an Student record book’. Please ensure you assist your child practicing and reciting their homework page at home.

Dear Parents/Carers
Maarif students are expected to wear their winter school uniform during Terms 2 and 3. Please can we also remind you of the importance of naming all items of school uniform with your child’s name and class. This means that lost items found around school can easily be returned.
Uniform Shop will be open every Wednesday during school term from 2:30pm to 3:30pm.
We consider that uniform is important for several reasons.
- It provides pupils with a sense of identity and pride in their school.
- It enhances the appearance of pupils and therefore the reputation of the school.
- It helps to instil a sense of purpose in pupils when they put on their uniform in the mornings.
- It helps overcome the worry about “fitting in” with fashions and keeping up with other children. All children feel equal and there is no stress, competition or worry for families about expensive brands/labels.
- It overcomes the problem for both parents and teachers about what is suitable attire for school.
