19 Mayis Gençlik ve Spor Bayramı

19 May Commemoration of Atatürk, Youth and Sports Day is one of the most important days in Turkey and is celebrated with enthusiasm every year. This year, Maarif Secondary students went to Canberra and attended the ceremony. The students, who made a speech with Ambassador Korhan Karakoç on the meaning and importance of the day, then attended the wreath laying ceremony.
Embassy officials and Canberra Turkish Community attended the ceremony where our students Tarık Uzun and Elif Özal gave speeches. After the ceremony, the students visited the Canberra War Memorial and learned a lot about Australia.

Our school was visited by two dedicated staff from the Gallipoli Home. The incursion included informative talk and discussion about the role of Gallipoli Home and how to show respect and kindness to people. Gallipoli Home is the first aged care home dedicated to serving the needs of Muslim and culturally diverse elders. It is a community space where old age can be celebrated, where elders can contribute, and where the wider community can benefit from the mutually life-affirming relationships they maintain and develop with elders. Students found the incursion informative and beneficial. The staff provided case studies of how they take care of the residents and how they have developed special and strong bonds.

This term we have started to learn new skills while having fun. We have a few clubs in place which take place every Tuesday afternoon. These include Cooking, Dance, Mehter, Drama and Baglama Clubs.

Turkish Lessons - with Dr Neriman Coskun
Dear Students and Families,
Welcome to Term 2! I’m excited about the opportunity to get to know you more, and I’m looking forward to a happy and productive school term.
This term students will have two units of study.
Year 8: ‘Social Activities’ and ‘Turkey’:
Social Activities
Students will discuss different ways and places people like to socialise. They will conduct a class survey and ask students to graph results.
Turkey
Students will share where their families are from in Turkey. They will locate information about people and places in and history of Turkey and use the information to create a travel itinerary for a virtual class trip.
Year 7: ‘My Day’ and ‘Where Do You Live’:
My Day
Students exchange information about aspects of their school day with their peers by asking and answering questions in Turkish. They have conversations about themselves and about how life is as a student. Students will listen to recorded conversations as well.
Where Do You Live?
Students listen to exchanges about the different places people live in Australia and in Turkey. They discuss the similarities and differences and write about these.
We are also excited to have new Turkish language resources from Turkey. Some pictures from these resources can be seen below.

Warm Regards,
Dr Neriman Coskun

Assalamu Alaikum wa rahmetullahi wa barakatuh,
All praise be to Allah (SWT) and may peace and blessings be upon His beloved Prophet Muhammad (SAW), his family, companions and to all those who follow him.
Students are now seeking two periods a week of Qur’an. Students are split into two main groups (Alif Ba Book students and Mushaf students). All Year 7 students who are on the Alif Ba book and Mushaf have homework reading assigned and it is recorded in the ‘Qur’an Student Record Book’. Please assist your child when practising and reciting Qur’an at home and sign the column which indicates ‘parent signature’. This way both parent and teacher can monitor and keep track of student work. Students who are on the Qur’an will focus on fluency and correct pronunciation as well as some Tajweed rules during lessons. Year 7 students are memorising Surah Ad-Duha this term and will be assessed on this in week 7 and 8.
The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said, "If anyone recites a letter from Allah's Book he will be credited with a good deed, and a good deed gets a tenfold reward. I do not say that ‘Alif-Lam-Mim’ are one letter, but ‘Alif’ is a letter, ‘Lam’ is a letter, and ‘Mim’ is a letter."
We pray that Allah (SWT) allows our students to keep the Qur’an in the centre of their lives and let the Book of Allah be the light of their hearts.
