Dear Maarif Parents,
Welcome back!
How lovely to be back at school after a restful break. It is always such a treat to see the smiling faces of our wonderful students, and their parents and carers, as they return for Term 2 at Maarif.
There has been further relaxation for Covid Safety guidelines, where we are now able to organize activities to allow more visitors on site.
We are very excited to be able to invite parents to school for other designated events throughout the year, and this will be notified in our Newsletter. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Ayse Kizilkaya who has been nominated as President of P&C Committee in 2022. First P&C meeting for the election of P&C members will be in coming weeks. Time and location will be emailed soon.
This week, we were fortunate to have two special events in our school. Our students enjoyed celebrating during our Eid Festival on Tuesday. I hope you and your family had a great time during Eid/Bayram. Students were happy to purchase gifts for their mothers from our Mother’s day stall. In addition, Maarif students have access to a new vending machine installed this week to purchase same snacks during the day.
This term, we are establishing Maarif Soccer Team and a Maarif Basketball Team. There will be a second chance for tryouts for the students who missed the first opportunity or students who believe that they could not show themselves on the first tryouts. Parents will be notified via email.
This year Cumberland City Council will be holding an Art Competition for all primary schools within the Cumberland LGA for ‘Walk Safely to School Day’ coming up on Friday 20th May 2022. Participating in the Art Competition will see a nominated artwork turned into a corflute sign for the entrance of our school that reinforces the safety messages that the students are learning and showcases students artwork. We will also receive a resource pack with road safety resources and a number of children’s books based on the fundamentals of safety that can be added into our library! Primary classes will design an artwork as a part of the art activities that are already planned in the program.
Primary school students in years 3-6 at International Maarif Schools of Australia will have the opportunity to participate in a weekend school camp. Outdoor Adventure Company is situated in the Hawkesbury Valley and has been operating for 25 years. Students will participate in a variety of activities. They will have the opportunity to socialise and enjoy some time with their peers. Please sign the permission note and return to Ms Reyhan by 30th May 2022, if you would like your child to attend to this weekend camp activity.
Maarif clubs started in Week 1, Term 2 and will continue every Tuesday throughout the term. This term we have Turkish folk dance, baglama (Turkish guitar), piano, cooking, drama and mehter (Ottoman band) clubs. Participating in various school clubs helps in building a child’s communication skills, creativity and teaching them how to work effectively with other students.
At our school, we have procedures in place to ensure the safety and security of students in our care. Our school playground is actively supervised by teachers, before school, at recess and at lunch. A reminder that morning supervision in school commences at 8:30am. Thankfully, most students arrive at school at or soon after 8:30am. The class starts at 8:45am. It is concerning that there have been a few students arriving late even after 8:45am. Being late for school has a negative impact on your child’s learning. Being just 10 minutes late every day adds up to an hour a week of lost learning. Over a year, this adds up to one week of school missed in a year! Being late for class often means important instructions are missed and the class is interrupted. Your child may feel uncomfortable and on the outer with peers. Children need to arrive on time, ready to settle into their school work. Arriving at least 5 minutes before the first bell allows your child to interact with their peers and teacher and get themselves ready for their busy day. Attending school regularly and arriving on time helps prepare children for the real world, where it is expected that they turn up to work every day and on time.
Parents of children in Years 3 and 5 received information regarding the NAPLAN Assessment, which will be taking place on Tuesday 10th – Friday 20th May at school. NAPLAN tests the skills that are essential for every child to progress through school, such as Reading, Writing, Spelling, Grammar and Numeracy. It is important to remember that NAPLAN is not about passing or failing, but about assessing learning progress. It is one test on one day, not a representation of all your child’s strengths and abilities.
At our school, we are fortunate to live and learn in a harmonious multicultural setting. We value each and every student enrolled at our school and endeavour to tailor our learning and support programs to meet the needs of all students.
Thank you to everyone within the Maarif community for your work and support for a very busy Term 2.
Happy Mother’s Day to all special Maarif mothers.
Best Regards,

Dr Zeynep Yaseen
Principal
Maarif students had the opportunity to celebrate Eid with thier friends at school. They enjoyed at fun day on the jumping castle, having a burger or some popcorn and fairfy floss. We wish the Maarif students many happy healthy Eids to come!

Let’s play with clay!
KA students were given the opportunity to roll, squeeze and mould clay as they made Pokémon figures, Bay Blades, snakes etc. This activity allowed them to refine their fine motor skills whilst using their fingers, wrists and hands in various ways. The benefits of playing with clay is that it encourages sensory development. It also develops coordination it's therapeutic, it extends attention span, it builds imagination and boosts self-esteem. The students really had fun doing this activity!

DO YOU KNOW HOW APPLES GROW?
Can you guess what the most popular fruit in kindergarten is? Apples of course!
Students in kindergarten were given the opportunity to think about the life cycle of an apple. This was followed by open-ended questions like “tell me what you know about apples,” and “what foods have you eaten that are made with apples?”
Our deep exploration of the topic included various hands-on experiences and concluded with students creating their own diagrams of how apples grow!

CELEBRATIONS OF JOY!
Students were welcomed back to school after Eid celebrations with more fun and festivities!
To continue Eid celebrations with fairy floss, popcorn and jumping castles was a wonderful way indeed!
CALMING CLAY PLAY!
Our revision of the letter P concluded with a clay arts experience! Students were encouraged to create their very own pony figure using light clay! Light clay is soft and pliable which makes it a great option for arts and crafts activities of a similar kind. Clay enables students to experience the form and making of 3-dimensional objects as well as encouraging their sensory development!
Students experimented with different colours and textures as they sculpted the figure of their pony!

All about Australian Coins
Year 1 students in Maths have been learning about Australian coins. We have explored their features, value, and importance in students' everyday lives. Students have participated in a range of hands-on activities to enhance their learning about Australian coins. Year 1’s favourite activity was using a Woolworths catalogue to go shopping. Students went shopping and cut out the total amount of coins needed to purchase the item.

Nouns
This week year 2 have been learning about noun groups. They were exploring determiners that go Infront of a noun such as my, the, her, his, that and this. On the mat, year 2 was instructed to write a 2-word noun group using a determiner and a noun to follow it. Later, we moved onto adding adjectives and changing the noun group to a three-word noun group.

We Are What We Eat!
In our PDH lessons, Year 3 are learning about what it means to lead a healthy and active lifestyle. Students have been exploring the five food groups, focusing on their nutritional values. Students were able to identify which types of foods we should be eating regularly and what we should consider as ‘’sometimes’’ foods. Students consolidated their learning through an activity where they had to cut out different types of foods and glue them in their corresponding food group.

Move and Freeze!
In drama, Year 4 students are learning about mime. We concentrated on freeze frames during their first drama class. For the students, it was a fascinating and delightful experience. They all enjoyed the entire drama session in which they were asked to execute various moves and then freeze.

What Matters?
As we start our new unit for Science, students needed to work collaboratively to organise matter into a category of solids, liquids or gasses. It was a great opportunity for students to communicate, debate and problem solve. The lessons delved into the concept of elements and atoms representing things we know as ‘matter’. This knowledge lays the foundation of the lessons to come, and Year 5 have done a great job in understanding that matter, matters.

The Pattern of Numbers
Patters are all around us and as we visualise patters in the world, we don’t often think about the mathematical concept or in more depth, the algebraic formula behind it. This week, we have spent a lot of time on number patters and understanding the concept of repetition. Students have worked out how to find the missing elements by using inverse operations, but we were able to extend ourselves beyond that and find an algebraic representation. Here, students have illustrated number patterns in a visual sense and were able to represent it also as a mathematical formula. Well done to Year 5 for accepting a challenge and to those students who had informed their peers of this level of Mathematics.

Jumping for Joy
As students returned to school after their own Eid celebrations, they were fortunate enough to be welcomed to an Eid Festival the school had hosted. The smiling faces in the following photos personify happiness perfectly. They enjoyed bouncing on the jumping castle, eating a wholesome burger for lunch and were treated with sweet fairy floss and popcorn.

Impromptu speaking!
In Year Six this year we will be taking part in impromptu speaking to help build our confidence in public speaking. Some of you may not be familiar with what this means but if you ask any of my students, they will be able to provide you with an answer. Nonetheless, impromptu speaking occurs when the speaker is given very little time to prepare to give a speech. Students have been provided with prompt cards on different topics with a 30 second starting time and they are then expected to immediately begin speaking on their topic. This speaking style involves thinking on your feet and being able to determine the flow of the speech as you give it.
Semih and Safiye did an amazing job with their go today! Well done to the both of you and I cannot wait to share the rest of our journey as a class building on our confidence in public speaking.

Data, Data Everywhere!
This week Year 6’s have been working on statistics and probability involving the organisation of data. We took the time to gather as much data as we can from our classmates in order to organise it into a displays form of a graph. Students were later expected to interpret and compare different displays of data in various contexts. Students loved working on this topic during the week.

Happy Mother`s Day!
There is no better way to make a mother feel special than to receive a lovely handmade card from her children... It is a great opportunity to thank them for all that they do.
Maarif students made Mother`s Day cards/letters and expressed their feelings to their dearest mums in Turkish.

Kindergarten started the new term with fun and games. They played games about meeting dialogues, classroom language and colours. They also practiced painting and speaking on these subjects.
We played greeting games in Year 3 and 4 combined class. We asked the students to introduce themselves in detail. They prepared a paragraph and introduced themselves to their classmates.
The students also prepared a surprise for their mothers. For Mother's Day, they prepared a Turkish card for their mother and designing it as they wish. They were very happy and excited while preparing the cards.

Eid Mubarak!
Kindergarten students enjoyed their first week back as their lesson was on Ramadan and Eid! They learnt the meaning of Fasting and a few things to do to be ready for Eid Day! I hope everyone enjoyed their Eid with family and friends. Here are some of our photos taken in class.

Five Pillars of Islam
Year 1 students will be given an introductory overview of Five Pillars of Islam this term. These pillars are the framework for worship and a sign of commitment to our faith. This week we started to memorise these 5 pillars in order: Shahadah, Salah, Zakat, Fasting and Haj.

Year 6 Qur’an Studies
Assalamu Alaikum wa rahmetullahi wa barakatuh,
All praise be to Allah (SWT) and may peace and blessings be upon His beloved Prophet Muhammad (SAW), his family, companions and to all those who follow him.
Year 6 students are now seeking two periods a week of Qur’an lessons with the support of a Qur’an assistance teacher. Students are split into two main groups (Beginners and Mushaf students). Year 6 Mushaf students was reciting Surah Qariah in turns. Beginners group are learning and reciting alphabet letters correctly on iPads. Year 6 students who are on the Mushaf, need to bring in their Qur’ans from home on Fridays and I highly recommend and encourage our students to practice reading at home. Homework will be assigned every week. All Year 6 students are memorising Surah Qariah this term and will be assessed on this in week 7 and 8.

The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said, "If anyone recites a letter from Allah's Book he will be credited with a good deed, and a good deed gets a tenfold reward. I do not say that ‘Alif-Lam-Mim’ are one letter, but ‘Alif’ is a letter, ‘Lam’ is a letter, and ‘Mim’ is a letter."
We pray that Allah (SWT) allows our students to keep the Qur’an in the centre of their lives and let the Book of Allah be the light of their hearts.
Jazakumullahu Khayran.

Dear Parents/Carers
Maarif students are expected to wear their winter school uniform during Terms 2 and 3. Please can we also remind you of the importance of naming all items of school uniform with your child’s name and class. This means that lost items found around school can easily be returned.
Uniform Shop will be open every Wednesday during school term from 2:30pm to 3:30pm.
We consider that uniform is important for several reasons.
- It provides pupils with a sense of identity and pride in their school.
- It enhances the appearance of pupils and therefore the reputation of the school.
- It helps to instil a sense of purpose in pupils when they put on their uniform in the mornings.
- It helps overcome the worry about “fitting in” with fashions and keeping up with other children. All children feel equal and there is no stress, competition or worry for families about expensive brands/labels.
- It overcomes the problem for both parents and teachers about what is suitable attire for school.
