Ramadan Iftar Dinner for Students

Iftar dinner was held to celebrate the breaking of fast at sunset during Ramadan. The program for the evening began with a Quran recitation by our Year 8 student Xavier Kaarsberg followed with the Adhan to break the fast. The breaking of the fast began with eating a date and a delicious meal was provided while teachers and parents helped to make it a memorable evening. There was lots of fun and laughter as the food was eaten, and we know that everyone enjoyed the evening.

Following the meal, our Year 3 and Year 6 students sang a beautiful Nasheed in Turkish and a very short talk was delivered to explain the importance of Ramadan and how the Qur’an was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad SAW in this holy month.

We would like to thank all staff and our parent committee for this great opportunity allowing us to engage and develop a greater understanding of Iftar dinner.
On the behalf of Maarif, we wish you and your families a blessed, fruitful, and rewarding Ramadan this year. Ramadan Mubarak.

As we wrap up our first term in English at Maarif, Year 7 students have wrapped up our novel study of Louis Sachar’s “Holes”. We have learned how themes are applied throughout the book and have found quotes to support our ideas. To celebrate a term of hard work, we shared a viewing of Disney’s film adaptation of the book, and students had meaningful discussions on what changes were in the movie and why these changes might have been made.

Year 8 have finished their second unit for the year, Myths & Legends. They have consolidated their understanding of how film techniques are used and what effect they have on us as an audience. We studied the Maori myth of Paikea and the Whale and were able to see how film techniques can be used to enhance the characteristics of legends in Niki Caro’s film, “The Whale Rider”. Once we did this, Year 8 got into pairs to research and present Turkish myths, including those of Sarıkız, Aynalı Mağara, Kız Kulesi, Kütahya Fortress and Asena. Students then created their own comic strip of their favourite Turkish myth.

This term, most of our students were new to Turkish Language. Despite being new, they did a great progress in learning Turkish letters, greetings, numbers, and introducing themselves. Students from Turkish speaking backgrounds or those with prior knowledge were able to take this beginner level contents to a more advanced level using complex language structures and vocabulary. Peer learning techniques were utilised to create collaboration between students despite their diverse learning levels. This collaboration created opportunities for students to unpacked Turkish culture given in the content. Advance students received additional work and reading books to further their language skills. We are looking forward to building our knowledge and language skills next term based on this term’s content.

Year 7 students have been busy learning about Ancient Egypt during the last two weeks. Students have learnt about death and funerary customs in Egypt. The process of mummification was very intriguing, and many students had a plethora of question! The lessons continued to incorporate information regarding contact and conflict and students learnt about peaceful and non-peaceful forms of contact. Significant individuals including Pharaoh Ramses II and Hatshepsut made our lessons even more interesting as students continued to learn about King Tuts tomb and discovery. Many students were interested in learning about the curse of the mummy! In addition, students have received feedback on their assessment tasks. We are looking forwards to a fun and rewarding Term 2 in history.

Students in TAS classes have continued their digital technologies journey throughout TAS lessons. Year 7 have been participating in digital research class-based tasks including drones and how they can be used to help communities, the advantages, and disadvantages of using drones and which companies currently use drones and for what purpose. Students were also provided with opportunities to include interesting information regarding drones.

Year 8 have also progressed through the Digital technologies course by learning about general purpose language, syntax, using pythons, variables, functions and adding random functions in different programs. Students class tasks also included creating a travel brochure for the city of Istanbul and include information regarding hotels, attractions, and activities for tourists. Furthermore, students have received feedback on their term 1 assessment tasks. We are excited and eager as we look towards a fun and exciting term 2.

Assalamu Alaikum wa rahmetullahi wa barakatuh,
All praise be to Allah (SWT) and may peace and blessings be upon His beloved Prophet Muhammad (SAW), his family, companions and to all those who follow him.
Alhamdulillah, as believers having faith and trust in Allah, we have overcome a very challenging term in which I would like to thank all parents and guardians for all their help and supporting our students throughout the term.
In Term 1, our Secondary students in Year 7 and Year 8 have participated in the journey of understanding ‘The Fundamentals of Islam.’ Year 7 students mainly focused on faith and belief. Our Year 8 students were covering the unit 1 topics from the ‘Level 7 Weekend Learning Series Islamic Studies Textbook.’
These lessons had a huge impact on our students which made them more cautious and aware of understanding ‘Iman and Islam.’

Jazakumullahu Khayran.
