A Message From Our Secondary Coordinator
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Transition from primary school to high school is a major change for students. Our secondary students have been settling into their new classes and become accustomed to high school rules, KLAs and classwork routines.
Secondary students had an opportunity to participate in the Healthy kids Pitch competition. Students were encouraged to design a pitch to promote healthy eating habits amongst children. They were expected to make a brief video explaining the idea and how it will be implemented within the school setting. We are glad to announce that our school has made it to the finals and student leaders have been invited to a presentation to announce the winning entry. We are proud of the hard work and dedication our students have shown and wish them the best of luck at the presentation.
School Captains, Vice Captains and Sport Captains speeches were held during the assembly on Monday. Students were asked to nominate themselves and present a one minute speech explaining why they are a suitable candidate and why students should vote for them. Some students presented light hearted and humorous reasons to be selected whilst others provided their past achievements to encourage the school community to vote for them. Year 7 Students had an opportunity to nominate themselves for class prefects. Students were encouraged to provide a one minute speech to encourage their class mates to vote for them. School Captains, Vice Captains, Sports Captains and class prefects will be announced during the assembly on Monday 14th March. We wish all the candidates the best of luck and look forward to positive change brought about by emergent student leaders.
Many secondary school students have eagerly volunteered to be a part of Tecknofest. They have selected their groups are in the process finalising their ideas before they commence on their project.
Year 7 students have commenced Saturday classes to practice for NAPLAN. Students are provided tuition between 9.00am to 12.30pm. NAPLAN teachers have incorporated various teaching strategies and methodologies to ensure students are well prepared for the NAPLAN examinations.
Year 7 and 8 students have participated in PAT tests. These tests provide a diagnostic summary of areas in which students require assistance. School will use the results from the PAT test to determine intervention strategies to promote a wholistic education.
Unfortunately, the School Clean Up Day scheduled on March 4th was unable to go ahead due to incessant rain. In the spirit of School Clean-Up Day, Students have been encouraged to keep their classroom and hallway clean.
I would like to extend a warm welcome to the new families who have joined our Maarif family recently. We wish our new students an enjoyable and memorable 2022!
If you have any concerns or questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me or any of the subject teachers via Sentral, through email or by contacting the school office.
Respectfully,
Adeba Qasim
Secondary School Coordinator

Assalamu Alaikum wa rahmetullahi wa barakatuh,
All praise be to Allah (SWT) and may peace and blessings be upon His beloved Prophet Muhammad (SAW), his family, companions and to all those who follow him.
As a Qur’an Assistance Teacher for class 7A, I was practising and listening to students recite a printed page from the Qur’an (Mushaf). I was able to identity each student’s level of recitation and Insha’Allah will be practising with their Makhraj and Tajweed. I highly recommend and encourage our students to practice reading at home.
The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said, "The best among you are those who learn the Qur’an and teach it."
Keeping this in mind our students can try their best to learn and recite the Qur’an.
We pray that Allah (SWT) allows our students to keep the Qur’an in the centre of their lives and let the Book of Allah be the light of their hearts.

This week in class our Year 7/B students are learning the topic and lesson on Tawhid (Belief in Oneness of Allah) and writing down notes from the PowerPoint slide. Students watched a short YouTube video on Tawhid as well as the reasoning of revelation of Surah Ikhlas (Surah Tawhid) and its meaning.

The tasks were greatly done and therefore had a huge impact to our students which made them more cautious and aware of ‘Who is Allah, the existence and oneness of Allah Almighty.’
May Allah SWT make our students steadfast on the path of seeking Islamic knowledge.
Jazakumullahu Khayran.

Visually Artistic and Musically Fabulous in High School
This week, our Year 7 students have been exploring the artistic element of colour in more detail, examining complementary colours in our colour wheel (blue/orange, yellow/purple and red/green). We combined this with our understanding of value, or how heavy/light a colour or hue is, to create resolved 3D artworks on 2D paper. In music, we have delved more deeply into our understanding of how music is built fundamentally and started to create our very first compositions using unconventional sound sources.
Year 8 has been working hard to apply our understanding of the elements of art in our pastiches of Indigenous Australian artwork, including Rarrk (or x-ray art) and Indigenous art symbols. We used vine charcoal to create a story of our school or home, and incorporated traditional Indigenous decoration and blending techniques into our artworks. Musically, Year 8 students have been furthering their skills in playing the ukulele. We added an extra chord to our repertoire (we know three chords now – C major, A minor and F major) and were even able to play along to Post Malone’s hit song “Sunflower” from the film Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse. We are really looking forward to writing our own songs soon!

Dear Maarif Parents,
We have all seen the devastating impact of the flood disaster on coastal communities in NSW. These areas are home to over 100 regional independent schools and tens of thousands of students, who are part of our wider Independent schools community. Many have experienced damage to their homes and have lost school equipment such as laptops, books and uniforms.
They need our support now. You can directly support affected students now by clicking on this link to donate to the Australian Independent Schools Fund’s (AISF) Flood Relief Appeal. All donations over $2 are tax deductable and a receipt will be generated and emailed to you automatically.
The AISF has no administrative costs; every dollar donated will go directly to supporting flood-affected students and will be distributed to families within days.
Thank you for your support
