Safe Driving and Double Parking
Parents are asked to be considerate and patient during pick-up and drop-off times. Double parking is illegal and very dangerous in a school zone and will get you a fine of $344 and 2 demerit points. U turns: Illegal U turns in a school zone are dangerous and will get you a fine of $344 and 2 demerit points. Please drive safe especially in front of the school during drop off and pick up times.
We also would like to kindly ask not to park where the bus usually parks. (Located on the corner of Percy Street infront of the school gate).
We understand that these times of the day are frustrating, however, we must work together to ensure the safety of the children and all road users. Thank you.

Lunch orders are to be sent to school on Tuesdays and Thursdays to order for Wednesdays and Fridays. Make sure the envelope/zip lock bags have your child's name and class clearly labelled. Students will not be able to order lunch if they bring their order in late.

Year 6 will be holding a food/cake stall on Tuesday 15 March 2022 to raise money for Year 6 Jerseys.
Food items will start from $1 to $5. Thank you for your support.

Year 3 and Year 5 students have been participating in NAPLAN practice sessions on Saturdays between 9.00am to 12.30pm. These classes are designed to ensure that students are well prepared for the assessments by using past NAPLAN test papers and incorporating teaching and learning of effective NAPLAN strategies.

Dear Maarif Parents,
We have all seen the devastating impact of the flood disaster on coastal communities in NSW. These areas are home to over 100 regional independent schools and tens of thousands of students, who are part of our wider Independent schools community. Many have experienced damage to their homes and have lost school equipment such as laptops, books and uniforms.
They need our support now. You can directly support affected students now by clicking on this link to donate to the Australian Independent Schools Fund’s (AISF) Flood Relief Appeal. All donations over $2 are tax deductable and a receipt will be generated and emailed to you automatically.
The AISF has no administrative costs; every dollar donated will go directly to supporting flood-affected students and will be distributed to families within days.
Thank you for your support

We are learning rows and groups
Kindergarten students did so well to make rows and groups using large coins and counters on their papers. They helped each other create these whilst the teacher requested, they show 2 rows of 2, 3 rows of 2 etc. I am so proud of them! These types of activities assist with brain development and exercising the muscles to problem solve and think cognitively.

M IS FOR MONSTER!
This week, students in KB partook in an engaging crafts experience relating to the letter M. Our goal this week was to learn how to use scissors correctly and safely. This was modelled to students explicitly with opportunities for students to practice before working on their little monster named M! We were very proud of our achievement and made sure to take many pictures along the way!

Hands-on activities
Year 1 students have been enjoying their phonics lessons where they are applying a range of spelling and reading skills. A range of materials are used during these lessons, students love using the whiteboards to demonstrate their understanding of the concepts taught in class. Here are some photos of Year 1 students during our structured phonics lessons:

In Maths students enjoyed playing Race to Trace to practice addition strategies taught. Students had to roll two dice and add the numbers that appeared. Students worked with a partner. Here are some photos of students successfully demonstrating their addition skills:

3D Shapes
This week the year 2 students are learning about 3D objects. During Maths, the students were provided with concrete materials, such as a physical 3D object. They were then grouped were they created a vibrant and informative poster on the 3D object chosen. They worked together to count the edges, surfaces, and vertices. They included each objects attributes into their posters. Well done Year 2!

Exploring Living Things!
This term, Year 3 students have been covering the topic of living things, where students have been learning how to group living things based on their observable features. Students have been engaging in investigations exploring the school grounds in search for living things. Students were able to justify what makes a living thing alive, while also drawing and labelling their findings.

Creating 3D Shapes
Year 3 students thoroughly enjoyed applying the knowledge that they have acquired on 3D Shapes by creating their very own shapes in pairs. Students worked collaboratively to ensure that each shape had the correct number of faces, edges and vertices. Well done to all students on their outstanding work!

You can do it!
Our Year 4 students are engaging in activities where they are cultivating skills of perseverance and having confidence in themselves. Students have been encouraged to think of five key learning areas: persistence, organisation, confidence, resilience, and getting along with others. The lesson was highly effective, and students will be revising these strategies throughout the term.

Congratulations to the Bronze award Mathletics certificates winners. Keep it up!

The Battle of Microorganisms
This week in Science, students played a game where they were given cards that represented different microorganisms and had to battle each other comparing the size, benefit or harm to humans and the range of species. Some microorganisms that the students battled were Influenza A (flu) and lactobacillus (bacteria found in yoghurt). Year 5 were highly engaged, and this consolidated the key idea that microorganisms can be both beneficial and harmful to our bodies and the environment around us.

Weathering the Storm
Year 5 have been making the most of the wet weather and using their lunch time indoors to create Lego houses. They have been working together, problem solving and fuelling their curiosity to create their ‘dream homes’. This emphasises our school values of respect, cooperation and inclusiveness. Very proud to see students’ resilience as they weather the storm and appreciate having access to create.

Year 6 DEAR
(Drop Everything And Read)
You may be wondering what DEAR means? Well in Year 6, every Friday after recess we take the time to Drop Everything And Read. This is a time regularly set aside in the classroom schedule for both students and teachers to drop everything and read.

DEAR time conveniently accommodates a variety of student interests and ability levels, since each student selects for himself/herself the book he/she wishes to read. DEAR time is now an important part of our classroom schedule as students recognise that reading is a priority and look forward to this period.
Here are some photos from our DEAR session last week:

We are learning Turkish with Ipads
Kindy students were introduced to Turkish ipad games this week and had a lot of fun. With these games, they will be able to do listening and speaking activities for simple Turkish words. They also learned basic colours and played colour-finding games in the classroom.

Year 5 continues to learn Turkish songs and nursery rhymes. They do gap filling activities and vocabulary exercises with these songs. At the same time, they have a lot of fun with their dancing accompanying the songs. Students are continuing to complete activities in the book ‘Türkçe Öğreniyorum 3.’

We remember Allah
Kindergarten students have been learning about Allah and how He is the Most Powerful. Also, that Allah takes care of us, and we should thank Allah for everything.

Students learnt the way we can remember Allah is by saying ‘Bismillah’ before we start and ‘Alhamdulillah’ afterwards. We practiced together how to drink from our water bottles by first saying Bismillah" followed by "Alhamdulillah" after we finish drinking. Please also remember to do this at home.

Six Pillars of Iman
Year 1 students have learnt the meaning of Iman (Faith) and that our faith teaches us to believe in the 6 pillars of Iman with our words and with our hearts. Here is a photo of students completing their activity sheet on the topic:

Assalamu Alaikum wa rahmetullahi wa barakatuh,
All praise be to Allah (SWT) and may peace and blessings be upon His beloved Prophet Muhammad (SAW), his family, companions and to all those who follow him.
Year 3 Students are focusing on the topic of ‘Allah the Most-Merciful, Most- Rewarding’ how Allah rewards His servants and gives a lot for the little we do. Students completed the activity work, and we went through the answers together as a whole class.

Students are also reciting, practising, and memorising Surah Fil which was played and displayed on the smartboard. This Surah should be memorised by week 8.
Jazakumullahu Khayran.

Music To My Ears in Primary
Maarif students have been hard at work building their skills in music. Kindergarten learned about the fable of “Little Bunny Foo Foo”, who was a mischievous little creature who liked to tickle the field mice on the head! They were using egg shakers to differentiate high and low sounds.
Stage 1 have been listening hard to rhythms that exist within speech patterns and even writing them down! Year 3 have been working to fit substitutions into their music, with the song “My Hat It Has Three Corners”, where they learned the entire song, before substituting different body actions instead of singing a word. This is an important skill in both literacy and language learning, and one that Year 3 is excelling at!
Year 4 have started their expedition into learning the notes on the staff and can now identify notes that are in spaces (our FACE notes) and notes that live on lines (where Every Good Boy Deserves Fruit!). Year 5 have been learning about bars and time signatures and have started to write their own compositions to fit in with specific parameters. Year 6 are diving into the musical concept of structure, or how music is built. They have been applying rhythmic patterns in pop music (like Marshmello’s “Happier” and Queen’s “We Will Rock You”) on bucket drums.
All students have applied themselves incredibly hard and have been such great Maarif ambassadors.

Celebrations and food
We love to celebrate our students at Maarif and accept that some families may want to share the special occasion of their child’s birthday with his/her class peers. As a school, we embrace this opportunity, however, would like to enforce a strict policy of not bringing in food or other edible item for these one-off occasions. It is important we cater to all students including those who have severe allergies by monitoring this closely.
If you would like to celebrate your child’s birthday, we would suggest an alternative to food and we thank you in advance for supporting the health and wellbeing of all students.
Dont forget your Hats!
All students are reminded to wear their hats during recess, lunch and sport. Please also remember to send a water bottle with your child every day.

Labelling
Please ensure that all personal items (clothing, lunchboxes, bags, etc.) are clearly labelled with your child(ren)’s name. Each year there are numerous items of clothing, especially hats and jackets that have no names or identification in lost property.
If there is no name, then we have a difficulty finding the owner.
Thank you for your assistance in this matter.
