Summer Breeze
Kindergarten students used thick paint and brushes to add different types of colour on their paper of things that remind them of Summer. Students used various patterns and made images that show how they feel and what they do during this season.
Painting is a way for children to do many important things like convey ideas, express emotion, use their senses, explore colour, explore process and outcomes, and create aesthetically pleasing works and experiences. Well done to our Kindergarten students for being so talented and creative!

Looking after ourselves and positive mindsets!
Year 1 this fortnight focused on looking after ourselves and positive mindsets. Year 1 students were able to identify different actions that lead to us living a happy and healthy lifestyle. Despite the rain, it did not stop Year 1 from getting our PE lesson in, students completed a 15-minute student friendly workout in our classroom followed by some stretches to help cool down.

A positive mindset is one of the keys to success students learnt in our You Can do It program that positivity plays a key role in our willingness to try something new. Students drew a self-portrait and wrote positive affirmations about themselves around it.

Well done to Omar Ghazi and Teoman Seyrek for working hard on Reading Eggs!

Procedures and Presentations
For Geography this term Year 2 have been studying places and people’s connections to places. As part of this unit students were assigned a task to choose a place that they have a special connection to and present information about it to the class. Year 2 did an excellent job showcasing their special places to the class and had a chance to practice their speaking skills in front of their peers.

For English we are continuing to have fun in the classroom as we learn how to write a procedure. Last week our class wrote a procedure for how to make a wave in a bottle and then we followed the procedures we wrote and made our own wave in a bottle.

Also, a big congratulations to our student of the week recipients.

EPIC Epicentre
Year 5 have been engaging in the scientific world of natural disasters and this week saw them creating a model to represent and understand the effects on buildings close to the epicentre of an earthquake. They collaboratively planned, created and analysed the impact this pressure has on our environment; natural and built. Students learnt about, tectonic plates, fault lines of the Earth and were able to highlight what countries in the world would be a risk for earthquakes. The experiment involved the students to identify the epicentre as the centre of their tray. They build three of the same buildings around the tray and as they forcibly hit the base of the tray, this acted as the highest point of force and therefore had the greatest impact to the student’s wooden structures. As a reflective summary, students discussed how they would build a town or city to ensure safety to the community.

This was a great opportunity for students to collaborate and share their knowledge with and assist each other with their learning. Here are some photos:

Mapping a Place
For visual art this term, students are investigating different ways of mapping a place using symbols. After learning about the history and cultural significance of Aboriginal Art, students used components of Aboriginal Art to paint with symbols to map a place. Although our artwork is not completed yet, students demonstrated a clear understanding of the cultural significance Aboriginal Art holds.
Here are some photos from our art session last week which will be continued this week:

A good nights sleep is essential for learning
About sleep and learning
Good-quality sleep helps your child concentrate, remember things and behave well. This helps your child to be a successful learner.
Poor sleep or not enough sleep affects concentration, memory and behaviour, making it harder for your child to learn. Children who don’t sleep well are more likely to feel sleepy at school during the day and to have difficulties with learning.
Concentration and sleep
Children who are sleepy have trouble concentrating during the day. If your child can’t keep their attention on what they’re trying to learn, whether it’s climbing a tree at the park or singing a song at school, it will affect their learning.
Memory and sleep
Remembering things is part of learning. If your child is tired, it’s harder for your child to remember basic things like how to spell words, how to do maths calculations, or where to find information in a book or on the internet. It’s also harder for your child to remember how to do things like playing a musical instrument.
Our brains create and strengthen different types of memory while we’re asleep. For example, just before your child wakes in the morning, their brain is sorting and storing memories and information from the previous day and getting ready for the day ahead.
Behaviour and sleep
Sleepy children tend to have more problems with behaviour at preschool or school – and at home too!
For example, a sleepy and tired child might not cooperate in class or have difficulty following the teacher’s instructions. A sleepy child might miss out on learning because the teacher is busy managing the child’s behaviour. The child might also miss out on playing with other children if the other children don’t like the way the child is behaving.
If your child is having problems with their concentration, memory or behaviour, checking your child’s sleep is a good place to start. If you’re worried, or the problems go on for more than 2-4 weeks, talk to your GP or child and family health nurse.
Working on sleep problems to help with learning
Many children have sleep problems, which you can often manage with simple behaviour strategies.
A good place to start with sleep problems is your child’s sleep habits. Sometimes changing both daytime and night-time habits can make a big difference to your child’s sleep. For example, you might be able to reset your child’s body clock with a regular bedtime routine, morning sunlight, regular exercise and a healthy diet. If these strategies don’t help to reset your child’s body clock, it’s a good idea to talk about your child’s sleep problems with a health professional, like your GP.
It’s also worth looking at your child’s breathing during sleep. If your child continually snores, stops breathing during sleep, works hard to breathe, breathes through their mouth, tosses and turns at night, or sweats a lot overnight, it might be obstructive sleep apnoea. Obstructive sleep apnoea is another cause of sleep-related learning problems.
See your GP if you think your child’s sleep problems might be related to obstructive sleep apnoea or another medical condition, or if you’re worried your child might have a persistent sleep problem.
About 50% of sleep problems that start before a child starts school continue into the early years of school. You can support your child’s learning by dealing with sleep problems as they come up and helping your child develop good sleep habits.

School Fees
A reminder to Parents and Carers that Maarif is a private school and the contributions made provide opportunities for students to participate in a variety of different learning experiences. It is a requirement of a student’s enrolment that school fees are paid by Parents/Carers and failure to pay fees may result in the student’s enrolment being withdrawn. Scholarships are available to families who are suffering financial hardship and we encourage all Parents/Carers to apply for scholarships if they are struggling to pay school fees.
