Book Week runs from 21st August 2021 to 27th August 2021. It is the longest running children’s festival in Australia, it provides an opportunity for children to have fun reading rather than it merely remaining as an activity done at school! Research abounds that children who are read to and read regularly at home have an educational advantage, both cognitively and socially.
Students at International Maarif Schools of Australia participated in celebrating book week virtually this week. During this special week we had a few competitions and activities organized for the students. One of the competitions we ran was a ‘Create a Book Competition’, open to students from K-6. We loved the variety of styles and interpretations that were sent our way and we would like to thank everyone who entered and would like to congratulate our winners. You may all read the winning pieces soon in our school library along with some of the other stories.

Create a Book Competition Winners for 2021:
ES1: Eden Mohammad Rafiq - Amarilla and Boborollo
Stage 1: Isa Ferhan - The Nice Vampire
Stage 2: Yusuf Ali Akdemir - The Little Boy and the Cheetah
Stage 3: Eren Ozlap - Wrong Ingredients

On Friday 27th August we also organised a live incursion in which students were able to enjoy a live show 'BIGGER, BETTER, BRIGHTER' from their homes. Students and staff were encouraged to dress up and join in on celebrating our CBCA Book Week 2021 theme, OLD WORLDS, NEW WORLDS, OTHER WORLDS, in an interactive and educational musical adventure. Here are some pictures from the online performance.

Here are some photos from the day!

Dear Parents/Carers
On Thursday 9th September, International Maarif Schools of Australia will be participating in R U OK? Day. R U OK? Day is a national day of action dedicated to reminding everyone that every day is the day to ask, “Are you OK?” and support those struggling with life's ups and downs.
On this important day, students will participate in activities during their online learning sessions that will give children the skills to have ‘a conversation that could change a life’. As a school, we want all students to feel that they can communicate with peers and teachers to get and give the support at times of need. Communication is a priceless life skill, and we encourage students to take part in this important day and message. Students are encouraged to wear a yellow shirt or accessories during their online Zoom lessons on the day to show solidarity as a school community.
Thank you in advance for supporting our students and the greater cause.

Kindergarten class have been asked to create a dance for CAPA and perform this in their own homes with the choice of their song and outfit. This not only gave them an opportunity to be creative but also to be active. Their performances were fantastic and were shown to the class via Zoom. Students have received green cards for being so wonderful in completing this task.
Through dance, children develop a greater range of movement whilst developing the ability to work within different spaces. Dance and movement patterns also develop kinesthetic memory. It also develops strength and endurance from an early age. Well done Kindergarten!

Celebrating book week with Year 1!
Year 1 enjoyed celebrating book week; students were given the challenge of reading books in different situations. Students enjoyed finding different spots to take their photos. A big congratulations to Yavuz Caliskan for reading the most books during our book week challenge. Here are some photos of year 1 enjoying and appreciating the importance of reading:

We Are Grateful in Year 2.
As we fast approach the end of the term we need to all remember to be thankful for the things we have and try not to ponder on the things we are having to go without. Students in year 2 have been focusing on a resilience skill called 'gratitude' that helps everyone to be happy. Gratitude' is a quality that someone has which means they are grateful for and appreciate things. Having gratitude allows us to have a positive attitude about ourselves and gives us the ability to show kindness towards other people. It was great seeing all the things students were grateful for. Here are some work samples:

In celebration of Book Week, we had a few class activities we enjoyed. We wrote book reviews, had our class pet Pug join sessions in a different costume each day and we had a class reading challenge. Congratulations to all the students who joined the competition and in particular to the winners who read the most books:

- Arqam Yaseen
- Elisa Ozdemir & Ali Baran

Koru Art
Year 3 have been busy creating many different artworks this term. One of our favourite pieces that we created was Koru Art. The Koru, (Māori word for "loop") is a spiral shape based on the unfurling silver fern frond of the ponga plant. Pongas grow wild and are found in damp bush areas in parks and reserves throughout New Zealand.
Students have enjoyed learning about New Zealand in our geography lessons and creating their Koru Artwork allowed them to explore the Māori culture through an artistic lense. Well done to Year 3 for their fantastic work in Visual Arts this term!

Book Week Fitness
Year 4 celebrated Book week by dressing up as their favourite book character. It was a day full of fun and students enjoyed it. Learning online and working at a screen all day can be draining and have an effect on the energy level of students so to make it more engaging and fun, Year 4 had a special visitor Superman to keep them active. Year 4 had fun doing their exercise along with their favourite superhero. It was super engaging and fun for all of us.

Power of Poetry
As we navigate through a global pandemic, it’s important we can focus on the positives and connectedness when and where we can. Year 5 have done a brilliant job connecting through writing and specifically, Poetry. Students have learnt how to be expressive using a variety of poetic devices and extending their vocabulary to truly connect. The free verse poem on the topic of Summer were shared between peers and it gave brightness and light in our Zoom lessons. A special moment throughout these lessons have been how students have supported a student in our class who came to Australia with very minimal English this year. Communication and bilingualism have been so positive during remote learning and I commend all Year 5 students and the friendships they hold.

POST LOCKDOWN TRAVELS
Are you planning on booking a holiday after months of staying at home? Well, look no further. Year 6s have been studying the continent of Asia for geography. We have been looking into the location of different countries and studying key geographical concepts and features of the continent. This week, we decided to write a blog post on the Komodo Islands. Students were required to read an informative text on Komodo Island and write a blog post which included a set of travel tips for someone planning to visit the island. The blog post included information such as weather expectation, safety tips and points of interest.
Here are some posts created by students to inspire your travel post-pandemic!

The year 2021 has been included among the commemoration and celebration anniversaries by UNESCO on the occasion of the 700th anniversary of the death of Yunus Emre, one of the most important figures of Turkish culture and language. We, as International Maarif Schools of Australia, celebrated "Year of Yunus Emre and Turkish" with his poems.
Students watched videos about Yunus Emre and recited some poems during Turkish zoom sessions.
Kindergarten students learnt about animals with many activities in online learning. They made their own farms with cut and paste activities as individual task. They recorded themselves telling us what they have in their farms.
Here are some examples, enjoy watching!

Turkish Lessons - with Miss Esra Pamuk
For Years: Year 1, Year 2 and Year 4
Year 1
Year 1 has learned to name the flavours and shapes of food in the last two weeks and they began to form sentences by making short descriptions. They also learned to say disease names and symptoms so they will be able to easily express how they feel. Playing verbs were also re-enforced by talking about the playground and games. Year 1 will learn to make many more short sentences in the coming weeks.
Year 2
Turkish lessons were intense for Year 2. Year 2 first learned how to describe objects and did exercises about it. The most enjoyable exercise was drama activities. Year 2, who spoke Turkish to each other by forming pairs, enjoyed these activities very much. Year 2 also made suggestion/approval/acceptance dialogues and completed their exercises by answering with reasons.
Year 4
In Year 4, there was the excitement of 30 August Victory Day. Students watched videos about 30 August Victory Day and had the opportunity to learn about this important day by watching the presentation of their teachers.
Presentations and poetry readings were made about the year 2021 Yunus Emre. In addition, Turkish stories were read and activities were completed.

Kindergarten have been learning all about caring! Caring about their friends, sharing with them and also learning about the importance of caring for animals in the Islamic faith. Students told me which pet they have and how they care for them. We watched videos on how our Prophet Muhammad (saw) was so kind to animals, how we should love cats, rabbits and other animals. Here are some pictures from our lessons on caring.

Year 2
Year 2 students are doing a superb job memorising their term Surah Asr. More than half the class have already memorised this surah and are onto a new one. We have been learning Islamic manners this term and this time it included the importance of cleanliness in Islam. We talked about keeping yourself and surroundings clean, cutting your nails and brushing your teeth. When asked if they are brushing their teeth, they all said they did, showing their very own toothbrushes- as you can see in pictures below:

Year 3
Year 3 is continuing to learn the fundamental beliefs in Islam. We have been listening to the nasheed by Talib Al Habib weekly which reminds us of the six pillars of Iman. You can listen to it here: https://youtu.be/9aIer6dRB8Q.

We have learnt in our sessions that the Quran describes a straight path for living our lives. Students learnt that this straight path is the right path, and we need to know which is right and wrong way. We listened to surah Fatiha to see the verse ‘ihdinas siratal mustaqim’, which means ‘guide us along the straight path’. This is the surah which asks Allah to guide us to the right way.

Students did a nice diagram to show us what the straight path is as seen in the pictures below:

Islamic Studies Teacher (Years K, 2 and 3)

Dear parents, In Shaa Allah you are all good.
In all my classes we start our lesson with a Dua that we have being saying all the time, but since we have started online teaching I have added another Dua for ALLAH (SWT) to protect us from the virus following Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) Hadith.
As a part of our religion smiling is Sadaqah or Charity, I made my classes to listen to an Islamic Nasheed about smiling and encourage our students to be positive and happy.
Some classes were watching a video about how to be nice to others, by not teasing and respecting each other.
Other classes were watching a video about Prophet Yunus (AS) to remember to be patient and understanding.

Lets learn to read the Quran!
During our lessons we learn the Quran starting from the Arabic letters. Its important to also practice at home, so we are repeating and not forgetting what we have learned. I am sharing a easy to use, interactive Quran recitation app. Alhamdulilah, it’s an excellent app which allows your child to listen to the correct pronunciation of the letters and repeat after it. It also has voice recording feature allowing your child to record their voice and compare thier pronunciation of the readers. I really recommend this app as its free to download and very beneficial.
I have included the links below.
Android: https://play.google.com/store/search?q=ireadquran&c=apps
Apple: https://apps.apple.com/au/app/ireadquran/id1003701018

For those who wish to access the lessons from a laptop or computer, please use the following link, as the audio lessons are available via this website: https://itqaanseries.com/qrme-book/

Thank you to all parents assisting your child with thier Quran reading journey.
Wassalam.

Our uniform shop will be closed until further notice in accordance with current COVID lockdown restrictions. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.

School Fees
A reminder to Parents and Carers that Maarif is a private school and the contributions made provide opportunities for students to participate in a variety of different learning experiences. It is a requirement of a student’s enrolment that school fees are paid by Parents/Carers and failure to pay fees may result in the student’s enrolment being withdrawn. Scholarships are available to families who are suffering financial hardship and we encourage all Parents/Carers to apply for scholarships if they are struggling to pay school fees.

Online Learning
Students are expected to engage in Online Learning from home until further notice.

Remember to move!
It is important for children to continue exercise and movement during online learning for mental and physical health. Some suggestions are to step outside and have a stretch, play ball games with siblings, dancing, aerobics, going for a walk, etc.

Did you know? Reading aloud....

Reading aloud together can increase attention and listening skills!
Reading books out loud with your child is great for their learning and wellbeing, no matter what their age or reading level. Here are some benefits to reading aloud with your child – even after they can read for themselves!
Learning by listening
As your child begins to read, they learn much more about what words mean by hearing books read out loud and discussing new words with you than from reading on their own. Reading aloud together can help build vocabulary, improve reading skills, and increase attention and listening skills.
Even after they can read for themselves, reading out loud to your child can show them what proficient reading sounds like, with pacing, intonation and expression. It also helps them experience the pleasure of sharing stories and develop a lifelong love of books.
Books are great teachers
Reading books together can teach your child about different emotions and situations and lead to great discussions. Talk to your child about the stories you read together – what do they think and feel about the characters and what happened in the story? This can help your child express their thoughts, feelings and imagination.
Books don’t just have to be ‘fiction’ to be a great read – books with facts and true stories can be fantastic too. Reading your child history books, science books or biographies out loud can be just as entertaining, and give your child insight into different people, things, places and historical events.
Time to connect
Sharing a good book is a great way to spend one-on-one time with your child – you are giving them your undivided attention, being close and sharing experiences and ideas with them. As your child gets older and your schedules get busier, reading together can be a way for you to connect on a regular basis.
Reading your child a bedtime story is a great way to get them relaxed and ready for sleep – but if night-time reading doesn’t work for your family, there are plenty of other times to read together. For example, you could have a regular snuggle on the couch with a book on the weekends, read out news stories over breakfast, read out recipes or the TV guide – or listen to audio books together in the car or on public transport.
Extend and challenge
As your child becomes a more confident reader, you can read books that your child could read alone (so they can re-read them independently later) as well as books that are above your child’s reading level. Listening to you read more challenging books exposes your child to more complicated stories and advanced vocabulary.
When deciding what to read to your child, let them choose – or look for books on topics your child is interested in, ones written by their favourite author, or your favourite stories from childhood.
