All proceeds will be donated to the Cancer Council on behalf of the students and staff from International Maarif Schools of Australia. Thank you to our students and parents who supported us in raising much needed funds for the Cancer Council.

On Wednesday the 26th of May Year 6 parents were invited to our High School Information Session afternoon tea. The aim of the session was to provide an update on the plans for high school in 2022. It was also a great opportunity for parents to ask questions and provide feedback on this matter. Parents were happy with the meeting, showing great anticipation in seeing our students move into High School next year.

Two of our public speaking competition winners from Maarif, were invited to morning tea with the Mayor of Cumberland City Council. During this event students learned different levels of government and the role of council. They also participated in a public speech challenge during the event. They displayed an amazing performance. Well done to Ahmad Niazi and Arqam Yaseen!

Potato People
Kindergarten enjoyed reading the story 'Potato People' by Pamela Allen and did a follow up activity of making their own potato people using various materials to decorate their real potatoes. This activity allowed them to refine their fine motor ability, eye-hand coordination, and imagination. We are developing the love for reading!

What is Heavier?
In Math’s lessons Year 1 students explored mass, we looked at the terms heavy and light. Students sorted images from lightest to heaviest. Students then investigated the term hefting. Students selected different objects around the room then participated in hefting to determine which one of the two objects was heavier.

Year 1 also celebrated Sayid Kudusov’s and Adem Mete’s birthday. Thank you Sayid and Adem for giving the class gifts, we loved them!

Celebrations and Commemorations
This term, year 3 have been exploring celebrations and commemorations of significance in Australia and the world, including, Australia Day, ANZAC Day, NAIDOC Week, Ramadan, Diwali and Chinese New Year. As part of this unit, students engaged in a task where they were assigned a celebration or commemoration and addressed a number of research questions. All students did a wonderful job at presenting their research to their peers. They should all be very proud of themselves.

Week 5 Assembly
Year 3 did a fantastic job presenting the Week 5 assembly. With only a couple of days of practise due to NAPLAN testing and Eid holidays, they conducted themselves brilliantly and performed a delightful class item. Well done!

Gas has Mass
Students have engaged in Science experiments that explores the physical properties of gases, and to test the theory of gas having mass and volume. In groups, Year 5 students created a balloon catapult and set of scales. Using the mass from their breath (gases; Oxygen and Carbon Dioxide), students pushed down on the catapult to make an object fly in the sky. They then created a set of scales and again, tested the volume and mass against a deflated balloon. As evident in these photos, they tested the scientific theory to be correct and enjoyed every moment of working and problem solving together.

Kaç Lira?
Year 5 students learnt the different kinds of clothes and categorised them into gender and seasons.
Our students made dialogues using their own clothes in order to bring to life what they learned by combining their own sentences with the typical sentences used in store shopping.
Below is a link to one of the dialogue videos: (Enjoy watching)

For Years Year 1, Year 2 and Year 4
Year 1
Year 1 is continuing to work on Turkish sounds. Every day, they find words with chosen Turkish characters, and they also learn the spelling of these words. They are racing with each other to finish their worksheet. Besides this they learned to count up to 150 in Turkish. They are becoming much better with practice.
Year 1 also learned new words by shopping at a virtual toy store. They repeated the dialogues in while shopping and continued to learn through play. They did lots of fun activities within their homework as well.
Year 2
In Turkish year 2 students are exploring different way of learning. Students took on a teacher role to teach Turkish songs and rhymes to each other. When they are singing, they also created their own dance choreography.
Students have also learned antonyms in Turkish. They practiced with lots of activities and games.
Year 4
Last week, Year 4 became chefs, giving recipe ideas during the Turkish lesson. They especially chose the recipes from Turkish food. Lots of funny dialogues occurred during these activities. The students also completed all the activities in their books. In their spare time, they played plenty of online Turkish games. Matching games were their favourite!

Kindergarten learnt the meaning of Sadaqa and that it doesn’t only mean giving money to the poor. Our Prophet Muhammad (saw) said “Smiling is Charity”. Students learnt in our lesson that that we must be good to others, and remember to smile because this is even a form of charity.
Below are some photos with Kindergarten holding up their “Smiling is Charity” mini posters. They all drew smiley faces, and had turns putting some coins into the Sadaqa Box.

Here is a link to the catchy song “Gülmek Sadaka” by Sinan Akçıl and Maher Zain.
Year 2
Year 2 is continuing to learn the Pillars of Islam. They have learnt the meaning of Zakat which is to clean or purify one’s wealth, and that it’s a form of charity helping the poor and needy. Students played a game allowing them to experience the value of giving and sharing. Some students had envelopes with lots of money, while others had only a few coins. Those students with much more money gave their friends zakat, which made both sides happy. Charity not only benefits the one who receives, but the one giving charity is also rewarded for their actions.
Students had a chance to do role plays by putting coins into a Sadaqa Box. This gave them a chance to experience donating to those in need.

Year 3
Year 3 is learning all about Allah this term. We have learnt about His attributes, being our creator and we are to worship only Him alone. We have memorised some of Allahs name such as – Al-Awwal (The First), Al-Akhir (The Last), Al-Malik (The King), Ar-Rahman Ar-Rahim (The Most-Gracious and Most Merciful) and Al-Hakam (The Judge). We enjoyed playing a ‘true or false’ quiz game today in pairs, using whiteboards to answer the questions asked on the screen. Mashallah Year 3 did a great job on answering all the questions.

Being on Time
Parents and Carers need to ensure children are at school before the school bell at 9:00am. In case of lateness, parents are required to sign their child/ren in at the office and children will then be marked as partially absent for the day.

School Fees
A reminder to Parents and Carers that Maarif is a private school and the contributions made provide opportunities for students to participate in a variety of different learning experiences. It is a requirement of a student’s enrolment that school fees are paid by Parents/Carers and failure to pay fees may result in the student’s enrolment being withdrawn. Scholarships are available to families who are suffering financial hardship and we encourage all Parents/Carers to apply for scholarships if they are struggling to pay school fees.

Bus Reminder
Students who travel to and from school by bus are reminded to follow bus rules whilst travelling on the bus. Removing seatbelts and walking on the bus is NOT permitted.

Students will be expected to be dressed in their winter school uniform during Term 2.
For all uniform requirements, our uniform shop will be open every Tuesday from 2:30pm-3:30pm. Please note, invoice or cash payment options are only available on the day.
