Dear Parents/Carers,
We are almost halfway through Term 1! Maarif students have been busy learning and enjoying school.
Congratulations to our 2021 School Captains, Vice Captains and Class Prefects. Students were elected by their peers for these roles, which are an honour and privilege. Our school leadership team members have very important roles, which is to represent the school and are exemplary leaders in modelling school values. We are looking forward to them leading school pride, building their own confidence and working productively with their peers.
Thank you to all our parents who are supporting our safety measures and responding positively to our current pick up arrangements. We ask for your cooperation by keeping the parking space where the buses pick up and drop off students free in the mornings and afternoons. Please do not drive into the driveway as this is a major safety hazard, it creates blind spots where students cannot be seen. Please also do not double park to drop off or pick up your children. Thank you for your on-going support as this ensures the safety of our children.
If you have any questions or concerns about your child or classroom routines, your first point of contact should always be your child’s teacher. Parents are now able to communicate with their class teachers via SENTRAL parent portal. I recommend you download the Sentral for Parents App for simple and efficient communication.
Enjoy a wonderful weekend.

Living things!
Kindergarten class have been discussing Living Things during our Science lessons. They have been identifying things that are alive like humans, animals, and plants together with showing knowledge about things that do not live for example buildings, furniture, and books. As part of this topic, we planted our own seeds from the Woolworths Discovery Garden planting kits.
Students learned about what plants need to grow and stay alive by adding the seeds into the soil and watering it. This also taught them how to be sustainable and take care of our environment. Well done Kindies!

Make it POP!
Students have been learning about microorganisms in Science. They have been learning that we use bacteria in our every day such as yeast in bread. Year 5 were set a task to research yeast and its’ uses. They discovered that it can be used as a rising agent to make bread as it forms a chemical reaction with other ingredients. We then put this theory to the test by trying to blow up a balloon as a result of a chemical reaction between yeast, warm water, sugar and baking soda. It was a success!

Let’s investigate!
Year 6 have been busy delving into their subject topics over the past fortnight. Students have completed hands on activities to apply their knowledge and skill of the concepts learned.
In science, students have been studying living structures of plants and animals. They are currently conducting an investigative task focusing on ‘Whether having leaves with smaller surface areas helps plants to retain water longer’ and using specific material (cloths) to discover this question.
In class we have been completing mathematics tasks that are tactile by measuring and constructing angles using projectors, creating and labelling the parts of circles using a compass, and also identifying the top, side and front view of 3D objects by building specific prisms using recyclable materials.
Students have been using their literacy skills to navigate through reliable sources online for the purpose of their history research activity; targeting the three levels of government, including their local area. They have been studying origins of words and completing dictionary/thesaurus work.

Kindergarten
In Kindergarten students are participatıng in various fun games to introduce them to a variety of Turkish vocabulary. They are really enjoying the challenges and social ınteractıons. Research states that learning another language supports brain development and stimulates cognitive growth.

Turkish Lessons - with Miss Esra Pamuk
Year 1
Year 1 had reading and writing activities with Ms. Pamuk in recent weeks. They repeated the pronunciation of Turkish letters while learning new words in Year 1 Turkish classes. They also learn new words for each letter. While doing all these, they learn while having fun using technological tools.
Year 2
Year 2 played a lot of games while learning about our family and animals. They liked the painting and cut and paste activities the most. They completed listening activities in Turkish with stories related to the daily subject. By winning new awards day by day, they further increased their confidence in Turkish speaking.
Year 4
Year 4 is now learning more grammar in Turkish lessons. Stories and funny songs make it pretty fun. They have a lot of fun with online activities, games and listening activities. The best activity for Year 4 was 3D models in Turkish classes. They learned many new words while making these models. They planned the reading activities they were going to do in the coming weeks.

Kindergarten
During our Islamic Studies lessons Kindergarten have been learning that we have good names, we wear clean clothes, and that we are good people. Being a good person also means we like to “share”. So they can showcase their wonderful manners I brought in boxes of my coloured pencils to be shared amongst tables. While they are tracing and colouring their activity books, I went around to see how nicely they were sharing the pencils with each other. Kindergarten also cleaned up and gave all my 5 boxes of pencils without any being missing. Thank you Kindergarten, for practicing such well manners!
Here is the Sharing song we loved listening to in class:

Kindergarten has been learning the Arabic Letters in class, watching, listening and repeating. Masallah they are also doing well copying each of the letters into thier Arabic Letters activity books. I hope they will also have a chance to practice at home. I have included a link to the app we listen to in class to help them learn the Arabic Letters. Please check the article below titled "Quran recitation made easy".
Here are some students showing thier excellent tracing skills!

Lets learn to read the Quran!
During our lessons we learn the Quran starting from the Arabic letters. Its important to also practice at home, so we are repeating and not forgetting what we have learned. I am sharing a easy to use, interactive Quran recitation app. Alhamdulilah, it’s an excellent app which allows your child to listen to the correct pronunciation of the letters and repeat after it. It also has voice recording feature allowing your child to record their voice and compare thier pronunciation of the readers. I really recommend this app as its free to download and very beneficial.
Here is a short introduction video about the “ireadquran” app:
I have included the links below.
